Sherman ISD Celebrates 30th Annual Fourth Grade Field Day
Loud cheers and yells could be heard from the stands of Bearcat Stadium as more than 600 Sherman ISD fourth graders cheered on their classmates participating in athletic events during the annual Sherman ISD Fourth Grade Field Day.
Students from each Sherman ISD elementary campus arrived at the stadium ready to compete in several different field day activities. Events included sack race, tug of war, shoe stew and a very fast 50 and 100-yard-dash.
The annual field day is a student favorite and year-end event that serves as a milestone for all Sherman ISD fourth grade students that will transition to fifth grade at Dillingham Intermediate.
Students enjoyed a great event with picture perfect weather for their field day fun and several campuses took home bragging rights. Sory Elementary won the girls and boys 100-yard relay shuttle and the girls 60 yd shuttle relay. Under the direction of Mrs. Vickie Giger, the group meets once a month to vote on a Neblett Fun Day activity and each year the group votes on a campus service project. Sherman ISD Elementary Music Teachers Recognized
The Sherman ISD Board of Trustees recognized the Sherman ISD elementary music teachers for doing an outstanding job of educating students in music education. The music teachers have recently implemented a brand new music curriculum that not only works toward building the musical skill level of each student but also develops his or her appreciation of music. Through their classes, students are exposed to musical scales, musical notation, the art of singing and music history. This school year, our elementary music teachers have planned and performed more than 35 concerts and events for our students including school board meetings, school programs, and events around the Sherman community. Sherman ISD to Provide Live Video Access to New SHS Construction Site
If you’ve recently driven by the new Sherman High School construction site, you’ve seen an abundant amount of dirt and bulldozers in action. If the opportunity to drive by the construction site and relish in its progress has escaped you, don’t worry. Sherman ISD has you covered.
Starting this week, district staff, parents, and community members will be able to see day-to-day construction progress of the new high school online. Two high-definition web cameras have recently been installed at the site by photo construction company OXBlue. One camera is positioned on the northwest side of the project with the second located on the southeast side. Each camera will take a picture approximately every ten minutes, and the images will be uploaded to a live web link.
“When people visit our website we want them to feel as if they are part of the construction,” Sherman ISD Assistant Superintendent Dr. Tyson Bennett expressed. “The camera angles have been positioned to give viewers the best optical views of construction for the main building, multipurpose activity center, and athletic fields.”
The live web link will give online visitors the option to download photos of the construction project directly to their device. The website also allows people to view and download an automatically generated time-lapse video of the entire construction project at any time.
Sherman ISD Director of Communications Kimberly Simpson said that the district is excited to provide the community with a convenient way to stay connected to the construction of the new high school and overall bond progress.
“We’ve continuously provided weekly video updates that feature our construction progress and our community expressed how much they appreciate the production of those videos,” Simpson said. “We are now enhancing our community’s bond experience and providing an interactive tool that connects them to the construction in real-time from anywhere in the world.”
Each camera contains a wide-angle lens with a heavy duty enclosure developed for the construction industry. The cameras also include unlimited remote storage which will allow the cameras to operate each day of construction until the project is complete.
“As we see the school emerge from the ground, we want our community to feel engaged in the construction process and take pride in the new Sherman High School,” Bennett said. “We are forever grateful to our community for making the new SHS a reality.”
In 2017, voters approved a $176 million bond election to address several district needs, which included the construction of a new Sherman High School. August 8, 2018, marked the start of construction of the new school that will welcome students at the start of the 2020 school year. Sherman ISD School Board Approves Technology Upgrades
All Sherman ISD campuses will receive updated technology next school year after the Sherman ISD Board of Trustees recently approved a $3.3 million district-wide technology upgrade.
The upcoming technology enhancements will be the first full-scale technology upgrade for the district in 12 years and will provide all teachers with a laptop and docking station, a 75-inch interactive wall panel, and a wireless document camera. Sherman ISD instructions staff will also transition from desktops to laptops.
In the spring of 2018, the Sherman ISD Cross-Functional Technology Committee, comprised of teachers, principals, students, and parents began meeting to identify new technology that would enhance student learning. In the fall of 2018, SISD teachers previewed an interactive projector and panel and provided feedback to the committee. Based on that feedback and research, the SISD technology department presented the information during the April board meeting, and the board approved the recommended upgrades and technology toolkit. The upgrades will meet the district’s objective to increase teacher mobility and instructional flexibility within the classroom, improve student interdependence and collaboration, and increased the connectedness between students inside the classroom and beyond.
In the spring of 2018, Sherman ISD began wireless and infrastructure upgrades and in March of 2019, additional upgrades, which included a new classroom sound, bells, and paging system were installed. During the third phase, teachers will receive their new laptops in the summer so they can begin the 2019-2020 school year with a new device. All upgrades are scheduled to be completed before the end of the first semester of the 2019-2020 school year.
