Midnight Sun Elementary
February 2022
A Monthly Communication to Parents from the Principal's Office
Committed Team, Engaged Students, Inspired Community
-where all students learn at highest levels-
Fabulous February is here
This is the month we really dig our heels in and fast forward learning. We've completed our mid-year testing and are concentrating on filling holes from the first semester. COVID has hit our area hard and we are operating at less than 50% fill rate for staff and upwards of 22% absenteeism for students, daily. It's hard to teach students when they aren't here and it's hard to be here when they are quarantined or sick. It's a Catch 22. Let's continue to work together to keep students home when they have any symptoms, so we can keep our community healthy and be able to move our students forward.
Best regards,
Joanne Van

(PE, Music, Library, and Counseling)
PE:
Grades K-2: Tag Concepts - Locomotor skills and movement in open space are emphasized, including chasing, avoiding, dodging as well as sport-specific skills of
flag-pulling.
Grades 3-5: Basketball Skills - This module builds on the skills introduced in the Primary Ball Handling and Dribbling Skills module through skill-specific basketball lead-up games. Dribbling, passing, and shooting in dynamic practice environments are the primary skills emphasized.
Music:
The Music Room received a $500.00 mini-grant from Delta Kappa Gamma (Thank you, Ms. Bates, for writing the grant application.) to refurbish the broken/damaged barred instruments - the bass xylophones, bass metallophone, several alto metallophones, and various alto and soprano glockenspiels. Replacement parts have been ordered and are expected to arrive in the early part of February, then work will begin on the repairs. The music room repertoire incorporates folk literature, nursery rhymes, and traditional singing games which often include playing the barred instruments. The students will have fun playing all these refurbished instruments.
Library:
In February, students will continue to learn about genres. We are encouraging students to try books and genres they haven’t tried before. We are also focusing on the 5 Finger Rule for choosing books. This method helps students learn to select books in a comfortable reading range.
Counseling:
Students will continue to learn about safety in February. We are using the curriculum Safer and Smarter Kids to address different topics. Ask your child what "Buddy" the blue dog was up to this week!
