Starting school is one of the most import events in a child's life.
Children who are prepared for Kindergarten will have a rewarding and productive year. The following checklist will guide you to see how ready your child is to enter Kindergarten in the fall. Your child may not master all of these skills before starting Kindergarten, but introducing them will build a foundation for your child’s success.

1. Promote self-management skills such as tying his/her own shoes, buttoning and unbuttoning pants and coats, zipping and unzipping coats and backpacks, using and throwing away a tissue, and manage bathroom breaks.
2. Organize play dates with other children his/her own age to support your child in interacting with peers.
3. Establish routines in your home (wake up, get dressed, eat breakfast). Begin a bedtime routine and a morning routine a few weeks before school starts to practice what school days will look like. This will help get your child to school on time.
Establecer rutinas en su casa (levantarse, vestirse, desayunar). Empezar una rutina a la hora de dormir y en la mañana unas semanas antes de que inicien las clases así para saber como será el nuevo horario. Las rutinas ayudará a que su hijo llegue a tiempo a la escuela.
4. Play cooperative games such as puzzles and board games to promote turn taking and following directions.
5. Engage your child in discussions during meal times and while you read and discuss stories. Read with your child daily.
6. Know if your child is right or left handed before school begins.
7. Children should be able to recognize and write their first and last name.
8. Children should be able to hold pencils, crayons and scissors correctly. You can help your child practice this by tracing and cutting out basic shapes.
9. Count things in the world around him/her to practice counting to 10 or higher.
10. Students should know the alphabet in order and be able to recognize letters randomly, in both upper and lower case. They should be able to relate each letter to a sound.
