Penngrove Press
June 9, 2022
Dear Penngrove Families,
Well, leave it to me to procrastinate until the last minute on my FINAL Penngrove Press. Truth be told, I'm a pretty awesome procrastinator. Just ask PTA board member, Adrien McGoon, who has helped me with every single issue of the Penngrove Press this year and is constantly having to nudge me to push send. Thank you Adrien for putting up with me! And big thanks to Jamie and Melissa for your years of proofreading my work!!! I couldn't have done it without any of you.
I've been dreading this farewell moment for some time now. I am much better at "hellos" than "goodbyes"! This week has been so special as I get to enjoy all my "lasts" with your #pennpanthers. Above all else, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to have led this incredible community for the past decade.
When I was first hired at Penngrove, I was 29, fresh out of my 2nd grade classroom. I had a lot to learn. Sometimes I wish I could go back to those early conversations I had with families and students and listen in. Last night, I was chatting with a mom who had just watched her son promote from 6th grade. When her son was in kindergarten, I met with her in my office to try and relieve her worries and fears about sending her firstborn into the public school setting. I remember her sweet little toddler roaming around the room, having a blast and making messes for the both of us to clean up. I have no idea if any of my advice was good that morning, but based on the hug that she gave me last night, I'd say we came out alright. 💜 I think about how nervous I feel sending my own son into TK next year and I hope that he is met with the same love and care that Team Penn holds for each one of your children.
Today, sitting in this big office, I am 39, and I still have a lot to learn. That's the amazing thing about our lives, we're never done learning, growing, and becoming better versions of ourselves, when given the right opportunities and simultaneously keeping an open mind and heart. There are a few lessons I've almost perfected in my time here, and I plan to carry them with me forever.
Always assume positive intent.
Don't be afraid to apologize.
Make time to dance.
Share your vulnerabilities with others, it makes you more relatable.
Remember that it's okay to be wrong, and it should fuel you to be better.
Listen. Listen. And listen some more.
Take risks.
Trust others.
Believe in yourself.
One of my favorite things about 6th grade promotion is the opportunity to not only address and celebrate our 6th graders, but also the opportunity to challenge our Penngrove parents and families. I thought I'd take this last moment to address you all to remind you of the following, an excerpt from my speech last night.
Parents and families, by virtue of you being in this audience tonight, you are showing these Penngrove Panthers that you support them, care about them and love them. You are showing them that you will see them through as they continue to grow up outside the comfy boundaries of Penngrove Elementary. The faces you see here tonight, need you on their team. They need you to keep them children, to model positive interactions, to walk alongside them when friendships get hard and decisions become difficult. Parenting is most likely the hardest job you will ever have. And although parenting may be the most difficult job you’ll ever have, it’s also the most rewarding, the most important, and the most incredible life experience you’ll ever be granted. So parents, don’t give up on these sweet little panthers when they test you. When they push you away, pull closer. When they ask for help, come running. And perhaps most importantly, be present enough to know when they aren’t asking for the things they need because it’s in those moments they will need you most. Thank you for sharing your most prized possession with us. As a staff, we are forever grateful and we treasure the moments we’ve shared together.
It's been a blast, Penngrove. You have my heart...today and always.
