Religion As a Common Theme

Religion as a theme plays an extremely important role in both Job AND Beowulf. Although religion is portrayed differently in each literary work, it is still a reoccurring theme.

Faith is a confidence or trust in a person or thing. Faith is also a belief in God or in the doctrines or teachings in religion.

"If Iniquity is in your hand, put it far away,

and do not let wickedness reside in your tents.

Surely then you will lift up your face without blemish;

you will be secure, and will not fear.

You will forget your misery;

you will remember it as waters that have passed away."

~From JOB

Good VS. Evil

If God is said to be all things great, how can he allow such evil?

"Then a powerful demon, a prowler through the dark,

nursed a hard grievance. It harrowed him

to hear the din of the loud banquet

every day in the hall, the harp being struck

and the clear song of a skilled poet

telling with mastery of man's beginnings,

how the Almighty had made the earth

a gleaming plain girdled with waters;

in His splendour He set the sun and the moon

to be earth's lamplight, lanterns for men,

and filled the broad lap of the world

with branches and leaves; and quickened life

in every other thing that moved. "

Putting Others Before Yourself

Selfish or Selfless?

"If I have rejoiced at the ruin of those who hated me,

or exalted when evil overtook them

I have not let my mouth sin

by asking for their lives with a curse."
