How do you organize what may seem like a chaotic mess into a classroom that empowers students to engage with content and pursue their passion? This book offers suggestions and specific tools – even if things in the classroom get messy, both literally and figuratively. Such strategies and tools include Genius Hour, Makerspaces, flexible learning spaces, meaningful technology, global learning experiences, critical and creative thinking, collaboration and reflection. Packed with relevant evidence and research, A Meaningful Mess, helps teachers understand why traditional teaching strategies are no longer working and what they can do to engage and empower this generation of learners!

*Springmill staff should NOT register via this link (this will be an individual building book study)

Mid-Ohio ESC Gifted Podcast Series

Mid-Ohio ESC’s gifted team is happy to announce a new gifted podcast series that is available for teachers to earn gifted professional development hours. This professional development option offers teachers a chance to learn more about specific gifted education topics including passion-based learning, gifted social and emotional issues, gifted teaching techniques, gifted literacy, acceleration, and critical thinking. This is a great option for those who need 5 continuing hours or those who like to complete independent PD options!

Other Training Options

Remember, it is not too late to reach out to Veronica or Leah for professional development options. We are happy to assist you in selecting PD that fits your schedule and needs.

Underserved and Underrepresented Gifted Learners

In October, the MMS staff kicked off a new professional development series that will focus on underserved and underrepresented gifted students. This will be an ongoing topic throughout the year. The focus will be around serving gifted students who are identified and challenging all students to ensure that all high-potential students are being challenged appropriately to build their talents. Thank you to MMS staff for becoming talents scouts rather than deficit detectives and advocating for gifted and high-potential learners!

Underrepresented- Who is being screened and identified as gifted? What does the representation index look like in the district? Who is not being identified as gifted? Is it equitable to the demographics of the district?

Underserved-those students who are identified, but whose needs are not being met.

Look at the Varied Faces of the Gifted linked below. Do you see these faces in your classrooms?

SolveMe Math

One favorite mathematics and logic websites for gifted students is SolveMe Puzzles. On this site students can use logic to solve visual and interactive mathematical puzzles. Students can even create their own puzzles to share with others. The best part is that there is no limit to what students can do and students can level up their learning by completing more challenging puzzles!

What Does Gifted Mean to You?

We asked a few Malabar 4th graders to take a moment to write about what being gifted means to them! Here are their responses!

Talent Development

When you hear the term "Talent Development" you probably think of gifted education, but may wonder how gifted education and talent development differ. Talent Development is inclusive to ALL students and provides services and enrichment for bright students who have needs beyond the typical curriculum. These students may not be formally identified as gifted, but still require challenges in the classroom to develop their talents.

Talent Development Includes:

  • Teaching ALL Students Critical Thinking Skills
  • Supporting Underrepresented Populations
  • Recognizing Non-Academic Talents
  • Strength Based Focus
  • Interested Based
