This Week in Class
MATH: This week all groups continued their work on geometry. We talked about congruent figures, symmetry, and numbers on a number line. We also worked on word problems as a class and discussed how to solve combination problems.
READING: This week we read How do you Raise a Raisin and discussed how to draw conclusions using evidence from the text. Students read as a class, read with a partner, and also self-read this story before being assessed on comprehension.
WRITING: We continued our Opinion and Persuasive writing unit. Students spent time writing their rough and final drafts. We also had practice with contractions and apostrophes.
SCIENCE: We continued our Structures of Life unit this week. Students participated in a seed search where they cut up fruits, counted the seeds, and observed the different properties.
SOCIAL STUDIES: We continued our unit on community. Students read about the three different types of communities (rural, suburban, and urban) and began a short paper comparing and contrasting the three.
OTHER: Olivia was Star Student! Students participated in coloring a design to celebrate Holi (the Hindu celebration of Spring). Mrs. Lipp took student ideas for designs and created two designs, one at the school entrance, and one at the Kindergarten entrance.
Next Week in Class
MATH: Students will continue to work on geometry and begin work on graphing. Topics include: numbers on a number line and introduction to graphing.
WRITING: We will continue our Opinion unit by continuing to write a first and final draft of our persuasive speeches.
READING: Students will read a short story and practice identifying characters, setting, and plot.
SCIENCE: We will observe the effect water has on seeds.
