Principal's Message
Dear Students and Families,
Last week we all learned that we would not be returning to our school building again this year. For seniors and other students moving on to the next leg of their educational journey, this was difficult news to hear. Despite the news, last week I heard over and over again from students and teachers that it was good to be interacting with one another again. It is apparent that students miss their classmates and teachers as much as our amazing team of educators misses "their kids." We will continue to focus on student well-being, but with the implementation of Distance Learning this week, teachers will be introducing new topics and begin assessing student learning. Although we're apart, we'll continue to learn together.
Wishing you health & balance this week,
Jill O'Neill, Principal
Phase 3 at ISB Schedule
Today we began the Phase 3 schedule, which is a change from last week. Last week lessons for classes were provided once per week. From now through the end of the year, lessons will be provided twice per week.
Daily period times are scheduled to provide structure to students and families, but are flexible. The majority of student engagement in coursework will be asynchronous (not on a scheduled time), however scheduled times are provided for the instances when teachers do want to have a scheduled, synchronous connection with students.
Due to the asynchronous nature of the work, the May 25th holiday will not impact the schedule.
The following guidelines have been proposed by the Oregon Department of Education to help students organize their time in this new experience. Teachers are considering these guidelines when planning learning tasks for their students. Students and families are encouraged to communicate directly with their teachers if the time required consistently falls outside of these guidelines.
Students should engage in structured, teacher-led learning for approximately 30 minutes each day per class period with a maximum of three hours spent.
Students should engage in supplemental learning for 1 - 2 hours per day (supplemental learning may be teacher led, student led, or family led).
Students should engage in meeting nutritional and wellness needs for 2 hours per day.
Student Reminder
Students, please remember every weekday to check Canvas Announcements for each of your classes (including your grade level course) and your BSD email.
Student Help Desk is Available
For students needing help with the BSD student device or applications, IT has created a student help desk. Students can email the help desk at shd@beaverton.k12.or.us or call (503) 356-4656 for support. Please visit this link for more information.
Quarter Grades
This week teachers will be posting nine-week progress reports. All grades reflect work that was taught and assessed before March 13th (the date schools closed). The Oregon Department of Education has given specific directions to school districts for the Class of 2020. We are currently awaiting specifics for other grades and will share information with students and families as soon as we receive it.
For Grades 6-11 this is a progress report to help inform students and families of students' progress towards semester grades that will be posted in June and appear on students' transcripts.
For Grade 12 students, these grades will represent semester grades. Seniors and their families should refer to Class of 2020 grade and credit information that was emailed last week and posted in Canvas Announcements.
Pre-ACT and ACT Results
Printed results for the 10th Grade Pre-ACT and 11th Grade ACT testing completed in February have been shipped to schools. As soon as we receive them at ISB, we will mail them to students.
In the meantime, students can access their scores online with their ACT ID. Students can get their ACT ID if they entered their email address on their answer sheet (test proctors would have advised students not to use their school email, but rather use the personal email address they will be using for college applications.) All they need to do is go to the ACT website, enter their email address, click "Forgot my password" and their ACT ID will be sent to them.
In the event students did not enter their email address on the answer sheet, they can contact ACT Student Services at (319)337-1270, and select option 1, then option 3 to request their ACT ID.
Curbside Pick Up
Now that Oregon schools have been closed for the rest of the year, you're probably wondering "when can I pick up my stuff from school?"
Dates for pick up have not been set yet, but we are working on a plan for future curbside pick up days. Staff will gather all your belongings from all hall lockers and PE lockers, but we will need your help identifying any items that might be in classrooms. For example, a journal in your Language Arts classroom or an instrument in the band room, or artwork in your arts classroom.
Make a list for yourself and when you think you've remembered everything, please fill out this form for only those belongings that ARE NOT in your hall or PE lockers.
We'll include information about dates for future curbside pick up days in the weekly ISB Newsletter and in Canvas Announcements.
Yearbook Sales
Our Yearbook Staff are in the process of completing the 2019-20 Yearbook and are still accepting orders. Yearbooks will likely be delivered to the school in June and we will arrange a curbside pick up for those who have pre-ordered their yearbooks. You can order yours online for $45. Go to commpe.pictavo.com, find ISB and follow ordering instructions.
#bethelightOR
Every Friday night April 10 through June 12, at 8:20 p.m. (20:20 military time), all BSD stadiums will light up for 20 minutes in honor of our seniors. Join us by turning on your porch light at the same time. Please do not congregate on or near stadiums and observe all social distancing rules. #bethelightOR
