Sehome High School Mariner Memo
Week of October 26 - 30
Principal's Letter
Dear Sehome Families,
It is hard to believe that we are reaching the end of October. Last week Thursday, we launched our Internet Cafe where students are able to come in and work from our Commons. We know that remote learning is challenging for all students, but if you feel that your child is having a particularly challenging time accessing remote learning and having the ability to work in the Commons daily might address those challenges, please reach out to Bethany Barrett, our assistant principal, at Bethany.Barrett@bellinghamschools.org. Our seats are very limited at this time, but we are hoping to continue to grow this program. It was SO incredible having students back in the building for the first time since March 13. What a huge energy boost to all of us to get to see our students again! We are also excited to start our fall workouts today and to have students back on campus this afternoon. There is additional information about this opportunity below. If your child is participating in these workouts, please remind them to wear a mask as soon as they get out of their car or come on campus. We cannot have students congregating in the parking lot. They need to go directly to their assigned field for practice and then return to their cars. We know this will be very challenging because they want to see their friends, but we want to be able to get this program launched well, so we ask that everyone follow the safety guidelines that Mr. Cushman sent out.
We are also excited to provide students with a way to quickly contact their teachers and other students. Starting this week, we will have the chat feature turned on in Microsoft Teams. This will allow students to direct message their teachers with questions they have. It keeps everything within the Teams platform. Please remind your child that everything they say on this platform is attached to their school login and is searchable if needed.
As the month of October comes to a close, I feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude for each parent, student, staff member, grandparent, neighbor, and community member who is helping to educate our students. It truly takes our entire community to make this happen. This has been true forever, but we feel it so acutely right now. Thank you for the part you play!
I hope you have an incredible week and find joy in the small things!

Students looking for a community service opportunity:
WECU is supporting, "Dear Friend, Pen Pal Project," a letter writing campaign where community members are invited to write letters to seniors that are facing high levels of isolation due to Covid-19.
All WECU Locations, with the exception of Bellis Fair, The Home Loan Center, and the Business Loan Center are participating as drop-off spots for letter writers. WECU is requesting letter writers to use the Night Drop. Letter writers are asked to put the card/letter in an envelope with “Dear Friend, Pen Pal Project” written on top. If you would like to participate, please do! Make a card, write a letter with a child, create art, or just say "hi." The Aging Well Whatcom website goes into further detail. https://www.agingwellwhatcom.org/pen-pal-project
