Mrs. Hladun's Tidings
We hope you had a lovely Spring Break and enjoyed the time together as a family. A reminder that there is NO SCHOOL on Monday, 4/22. We look forward to welcoming our Colts back to campus on Tuesday, 4/23 for a regular school day.
Sometimes our children can surprise us with the intensity of their emotions. Remember that our students are still learning how to process their feelings - their prefrontal cortex doesn't fully mature until about age 25 (crazy, huh?). Here is some info about the part of the brain that causes meltdowns, and here are some resources to help you cope and support your child!
This year, we rolled out a new service for fliers called PeachJar. We have gotten some good feedback around it, although transitioning to a digital flier system is a little out of some folk's comfort zone, I know! A positive note - through our digital fliers, in the last 8 months, we've saved 4 trees and 34,650 sheets of paper! To check out PeachJar, click here now. Remember - it's ALWAYS linked at the bottom of our weekly newsletter and on our website.
Families of students in Grades 3-5
The assessments are not timed and you can talk to your teacher about specific testing dates/times of day. In general, though:
- 5th grade will be giving their assessments in the first 2 weeks of May (to allow plenty of time for make ups before Fort Bragg!)
- 4th grade will be giving their assessments in the 2nd and 3rd week of May
- 3rd grade will be giving theirs in the 1st-3rd weeks of May
- if a student needs more time or is absent, we'll work with him/her to coordinate their make up testing, so no need for any anxiety about finishing! We always get it done! :)
A few reminders:
- Students can NOT wear smart watches or have cell phones in the testing space. Please leave them at home, but if they do come to school, expect that we will ask your child to power them off and put them in their backpacks; this is per the testing rules.
- There are many listening components of the tests. PLEASE send in a pair of headphones for your child to wear so that we can minimize the spread of germs and bugs.
- Please be sure your child comes to school well rested, having had a healthy breakfast (high protein is awesome!) and that he/she brings a healthy snack (or two) to keep their brain fueled.
- Please be sure your child arrives to school ON TIME (in the gate before 8:10 am) so he/she isn't flustered when walking into class after testing may have started
Also, this year, the assessment results will be made available digitally only through the PowerSchool portal. This is a new development, so stay tuned for details!
Arrival/Departure from Campus - Safety is Key!
A few important reminders:
- The bus zone is NOT a drop off/pick up zone before and after school
- Encourage your child to come to school with a buddy
- Use crosswalks - we provide crossing support at Joiner/Groveland, Groveland/Whitefield, and in our own parking lot loop
- If you need to get out of your car to help your child, please park in the neighborhood or in a marked spot, not in the drop off areas
- When you drop off along the school's curb, please pull all the way forward to the Kindergarten area - our Greeters are happy to walk your child to the gate!
- Please drop off between 7:55-8:10 am (students are late if they are not through the main office by the 8:15 am bell)
- Please pick up on time - PM K and grade 1-5 supervision ends at 2 pm (Mondays) and 3 pm (Tuesdays-Fridays); AM TK & kinder dismisses at 11:20 am each day and teachers can wait with students until 11:30 am before they have to move onto other job responsibilities
For a reminder about appropriate areas for parking and drop off, click here.
We are also seeking parents/family members who are open to volunteering to cross kids at Danbury and Groveland before/after school. If you are available to support from 7:45-8:10ish and/or 2:40-3 ish, let Mrs. Hladun know at jhladun@wpusd.org. Big thanks to our WatchDOGS who are providing crosswalk support at our main crosswalk most days!
