Principal's Weekly Update - October 6, 2017

REMINDER: NO SCHOOL MONDAY

From the Desk of Katrina Baughman:

PBIS Rewards has been a HUGE success so far this year! Over 61,000 Shields have been awarded to students in grades 1-5. While many students are redeeming their Shields at the Medieval Market during their weekly visit, a lot of other students are saving up for some of the bigger prizes. The natural teachable moments regarding saving and spending have been a really exciting added bonus to the program!


Behavior throughout the building has improved, which is evident when you walk the hallways. The hallways are much quieter this year, which helps students that are in classes maintain focus. Additionally, student's time on task in the classrooms has improved which provides more time for learning! Overall, the implementation of PBIS and PBIS Rewards has been very successful at OES! I am looking forward to see the growth in our students throughout the year!

Staff Spotlight: Michelle Wulff

Mrs. Wulff has been with Otsego for 7 years. She earned her Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education from Bowling Green State University. She has taught Pre-kindergarten and kindergarten at Otsego. She lives in Portage with her husband, and two children. She enjoys spending time with her family, shopping, playing volleyball, and cheering on the BGSU Falcons!

Picture Re-Takes are October 17th. If your student(s) did not get a picture taken at Back to School days in August, OR if you are unhappy with your pictures, please complete the form below and send it with your student(s) on October 17th.

Arrival and Dismissal Procedures

Morning Drop-Off

  1. Please use the entire length of the drop off zone (even past the crosswalk) to keep the line moving. If all cars pull up as far as they possibly can we can fit more vehicles along the sidewalk and more students can exit at a time. This will make drop-off go quicker while maintaining safety.

  2. Students should only be let out on the side of the car that is next to the curb. This is to avoid students being hit by a moving car in the lane farther away from the curb. If your student needs to get out on that side of the car, please park in a parking spot and have your student walk into the building using the crosswalk.

  3. Please do not stop in the crosswalk. If you are dropping a student off, please do not stop your car in the crosswalk. This is a safe place for students to cross, and when there are cars in the crosswalk it creates a safety concern.

  4. The second lane is for driving only. No students should be let out of the car in the lane farther from the curb. Students should only be exiting cars onto the sidewalk so that we can ensure their safety.

  5. Please remember to NOT park your car in front of the school! The line needs to keep moving to efficiently get students into the school in a timely manner, and when there is a parked car in the drop-off line, the whole process gets backed up. If for some reason you need to leave your car, please use the available parking spaces.

Phone Number Changes

If your phone number has changed and needs to be updated in our system PLEASE call the office with that information. There have been many recent issues where we do not have the right number or it has been disconnected when trying to contact a students parent or guardian. It is crucial that we have a working number in the event of an emergency.

A Note from the School Nurse:

ATTENTION PARENTS/GUARDIANS:


This year we have the following over the counter medications listed on the enclosed document stocked in each office. Please fill out the form and return to school with your child. We are hoping to cut back on parents needing to bring medication in and/or prevent sending students home. Hopefully this makes it easier on parents, teachers and staff.



Several students have been bringing cough drops with them to school without a note. Students may not take these without written permission from a parent/guardian. We have this listed on the form as well.

Just a reminder that the carryover period from last year for free and reduced meals has expired.


If your child/children received free or reduced meals last year and you haven't filed a new application, you are now responsible for any charges that are incurred.


Meal benefit expiration letters were mailed on September 15th to the address that is on file.

Hello Otsego Knights! I hope everyone had a wonderful week. Here are some reminders about Dear Nick, Be the Change Club and the OES Postal Service.


First, videos for Dear Nick will start in October, with information being sent home during the second week of each month. Students are encouraged to share their written responses with Miss Syrowski. You will be able to access the Dear Nick videos online through the counseling website or through google classroom (if you have a 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade student). Again, responses should be in written form and returned to the Dear Nick bin outside of Miss Syrowski's door.


Now that the applications have been turned in for our Wee Mail Postal Services, students will start to be notified if they have been selected for a post office job. We have so many wonderful applicants that it has been hard to choose just 24 students. Please keep that in mind if you are not selected, but remember there will be more to help out with as the year goes on! Students will receive a note from the office if they have received a job on the postal team by Wednesday, October 18th. Training will begin the Monday, October 23rd and mail will be delivered starting on October 27th.


Finally, our 5th graders will be notified on Tuesday October 10th if they have been selected for Be the Change Club. Meetings will be held at least once a month during their lunch period. Please contact Miss Syrowski with any questions you may have about these programs. You can also find this information on OES's counseling website. Reminders

SAVE ALUMINUM CAN TABS

Please help our students by collecting tabs from aluminum cans. Each tab is easy to remove and can be donated to the Ronald McDonald House. The tabs help fund various projects for Ronald McDonald Houses and its visitors. Send the tabs in a bag to the school and our students will do the rest!


SAVE BOX TOPS

You can help the school earn money for supplies by collecting Box Tops. Our PTO collects and counts them and puts the money straight back into the school. (We earn 10 cents per Box Top). If you are able to collect a lot of these, it would be great if you could turn them in in groups of 50, but we will take them even if they are not grouped together.
