Reading Round Up

Our read aloud novel, Witherwood Reform School, is really getting interesting! The Eggers children have been dumped by their dad on the side of the road on a rainy night at a really old building. We left off as they were deciding to go in, and we have a feeling it's not a great decision. We will be tweeting out our thoughts about this novel and tagging Mr Skye on them. Who knows? Maybe we'll get a reply!

We are also working on building our reading stamina. Please help your student by encouraging them to read nightly. Maybe you could even find a book to read together! You'd be amazed at the great conversations that can occur as a result of a great book.

Writing Notes

We are nearing the end of our magazine article writing piece! Most of the students worked on their final draft this week. I am so impressed with their articles. This writing piece was one that the students have worked on for weeks. They have put a lot of hard work and thought into this project. Next week, we will wrap up our nonfiction writing unit.

In the coming weeks, we will move to persuasive writing. The students will create their own PSA. They will brainstorm a list of things that they feel passionate about. We will discuss claims, as well as the importance in having evidence to back up claims that we make.

Social Studies

This week we worked on raps about the Bill of Rights. We hope to have some downloaded and available for your listening pleasure by our next newsletter. There is so much great stuff happening in the world of Social Studies this year, Election years always provide us with tons of materials to teach our students about how our government works, and why it's important to be involved in the process.
