1. Vo-techs work with WilmU for certificate degree program
Delaware’s Vo-Tech School Districts work hard producing the next generation of journey workers through various Apprenticeship Programs. As many ABC members are aware, the district values and relies heavily on local business support to ensure training is up-to-date, relevant, and meets industry expectations.
“The close working relationship with business partners is exactly why Delaware’s Apprenticeship and Technical Training Programs continue to produce a skilled workforce that meets the demands of the twenty-first century labor market,” said Mark Wilson, Supervisor of Adult Education Division, for the New Castle County Vo-Tech School District. “Delaware’s Vo-Tech School Districts, NCCVT, POLYTECH, and Sussex Tech, have listened closely to industry needs and are pursuing a valuable opportunity for our Apprenticeship and Technical Training graduates through the creation of an articulation agreement within Wilmington University.”
According to Wilson, the agreement would allow graduates to earn advanced credit in Wilmington University’s programs and/or would enable Wilmington University to create a certificate or degree program in construction management or a similar type of program.
“Although Delaware’s Vo-Tech School Districts will not benefit from this initiative directly, we are very excited WilmU is willing to create of a new certificate or degree program that is specifically tailored to our students and business partners,” said Wilson. “we feel it would be of great benefit to our students and business partners because it will allow graduates to transition seamlessly to a certificate or degree program that is directly tied to their industry while giving them the skill set needed for upward mobility within their company.”
To help create a program that is tailored to industry needs and Wilson is asking for input on the following areas:
- Would you support the creation of a program that would provide a seamless transition for students graduating apprenticeship training, while grandfathering in prior graduates, to receive advanced standing in a program in construction management or a similar type of program?
- If this program existed, what areas (Leadership, Human Resource Management, Business Skills and Fundamentals, Finance, Accounting, Law/Regulation, Organizational Management, Supervisory Management, Budget Management, Project Management, etc.) would be most essential to your organization? Please feel free to expand on your answer.

Howard Football Coaches Deliver
State Championship Ring to Fallen Wildcat
Howard football coaches led by head coach Dan Ritter visited the home of former player Kyree Lindsey on Monday to present a DIAA Division II championship ring with Kyree's name and jersey number on it to his parents, Brandi and Willis Lindsey Sr. Kyree, a 10th grade Legal Support Services student and defensive tackle on the team, tragically drowned last October along with two brothers and a cousin when an SUV crashed into the C&D Canal.
Due to coronavirus restrictions, other Howard team members received their rings at a drive-thru ceremony held at the school in mid May. Ritter said he wanted to make a special presentation to Kyree's parents, both of whom are Howard graduates. Ritter was joined by assistant coaches Rahsaan Matthews Sr., Ryan Hawthorne, Nick Grajewski, Curtis Clack, James Garrett and Howard assistant principal Dr. Tamara McDermott on the front steps of the Lindseys’ home.
“We really, really appreciate them thinking about us, coming out and including Kyree,” his mother told a News Journal reporter. “It meant a lot. He was one of those go-getter types of kids, very spirited. So this was awesome.”
Up Ahead: Summer Preparation
1. We will begin planning our Summer Work Schedule. We will continue to telework until July. We will have a plan ready for distribution by mid next week.
2. Our task force will be fully running by the end of next week. We've are thinking of using Trello as our project management tool since there are several working groups. We will provide training. Below is the task force and various working groups that were assembled and shared with you during our all admin Friday meeting a couple weeks ago. The working groups are still being formed and the leads are reaching out to individuals.
If there is a particular group you would like to join, please let the working group lead know. There are still a couple other areas of focus we are paying attention to like Driver's Ed or Athletics, we just don't know if they will need a full working group yet.

Take the Time to Climb: Principle L -- Instruction
Going Beyond...
This article is a little dated but covers Principles of Instruction that are proven research-based strategies. What I like about this article is that these principles transcend platform (with some finesse) and if we begin next school year in a remote learning environment, we need to be particularly aware of these strategies.
