MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL LAMBERT
Dear Mariano Castro Parents,
Dear Parents,
Let's talk about helping with writing at home. The first step to be able to write well is to be able to say it verbally. This is where it is easy for you to help at home. One of the three areas of writing is opinion writing. Having frequent conversations with your child, during which you ask them to give their opinion, will greatly support their writing at school. The other important part of opinion writing is the ability to give reasons to support your opinion. Ask your child to tell you the reasons why they did or didn't enjoy something, why they like one game better than another, etc.
This is an example of an opinion with two reasons:
Parent: Which game do you like playing best?
Child: Tag
Parent: Why?
Child: I like tag because I get to run a lot.
Parent: What's another reason why you like tag the best?
Child: I like it because lots of kids can play at the same time.
The amount of reasons the student needs to give increases in 3rd grade and above. When a child is able to have good conversations like this at home, then they will be able to write like this very easily at school.
Best regards,
Theresa Lambert
Principal Mariano Castro Elementary
