Updates from Manassas Park Middle School - 5/10/2019

Week 36 - Course Selection and Teacher Appreciation Week!

This week was Teacher Appreciation week... and our teachers feel Super Appreciated! Each day this week was a different surprise for our teachers, including an amazing dessert spread on Friday from our families. Thank you all so much for your support of MPMS - it was very appreciated!

This week counselors met with most students to discuss course selection for next school year (2019-20.) This included a discussion of core classes as well as explaining a change in our elective schedule that will start next year.

Elective Schedule Change

In our ongoing efforts to enhance the teaching and learning opportunities at MPMS, we are excited to share a realignment in our elective schedule for the 2019-20 school year. Now, all elective classes will be 90 minutes on A and B days.

Students will only be taking 5 classes per quarter (instead of the current maximum of 7) and students will change their elective classes each quarter or semester. In addition, this allows our electives teachers more teaching time (as it removes a transition each school day) without compromising the plethora of elective offerings currently available to our students at MPMS.

In order to keep the same number of instructional minutes, different classes will be offered for different lengths of time:

Full Year Electives: Band, Choir, ESOL, Spanish I

Semester (1/2) Year Electives: PE

Quarterly Electives: All Art, Business, STEM, Family & Consumer Science, Guitar, Journalism, and Spanish 6 & 7 classes

See the two example schedules below for a possible 7th grade elective student schedule to gain an idea of how the year would work.

Students who have met with their school counselor have a worksheet that breaks down electives, and if you or your child have any questions please reach out to their school counselor or elective teachers (specifically band and choir.)

May 13 - A Presentation for Parents

Parents, if you are not familiar with the term juuling, I highly recommend attending the substance use prevention night on May 13th. (See flyer below) MPCS and MPPD will be discussing the most common substances students experiment in middle and high school. Recently there has been a major increase in the number of students who are experimenting with vaping and juuling, thinking it is a harmless way to have fun, when in fact they are taking in nicotine in similiar/greater quantities to smoking cigarettes. Come and learn the facts from the experts, then use that information to have important conversations about health and addiction with your children.

Need a Sports Physical for Next year? Take care of it early this year!!

We will be offering sports physicals at the middle school for next year on Monday, May, 20, after school in the clinic. The cost is $25, checks made payable to MPMS. Athletes MUST sign up with Mrs. Webb and pay in advance.
