AVID Focus: Having An AVID Mindset
What is a Growth Mindset?
•Believing you can learning anything! (You need to practice)
•Believing you can meet challenges (When you get tired)
•Believing you want the challenge (I can run that long race)
•Believing you can learn from failure (There is another race to be run)
•MOST IMPORTANTLY: Knowing your effort and attitude will ultimately determine success or failure (Positive perspective on the race)
Ways to Display a Growth Mindset:
1.Do your homework.
•15 minutes minimum every night. Make sure you review all key concepts at night!
2.Don’t Cheat
•The biggest part of your grade will come from tests. You have to train!
3. Ask questions
•Make your teacher teach you! Be active in your learning!
4.Help others!
•Ever wonder how your teacher remembers all of this stuff? It’s because teaching others is a huge memory tool!
5.Find a friend or a group to study with
•Someone better at the subject than you
•Someone who genuinely wants to succeed too (avoid “social” studying!)
6.See your teacher outside of class
•Visit your teacher when there are not 30 other students around
•Show your teacher how much you want to pass by seeking individual tutoring
7.Ask other teachers!!
•Use a prior teacher if needed.
•Use a teacher from Youtube or another online source.
8.Never miss Class!!
•Complex material builds and spirals!
•Specific directions are often worth a lot of points.
9.Study for tests ahead of time!!
•Not a lot of homework? Study a little bit. The more ahead of time you start to study, the better the results.
10.Take notes and keep notes!!
