Curriculum Corner
Grammar: This week, we will continue reviewing subject, predicate, and direct objects and will introduce indirect objects. Next week, we will work on subject complements.
Wordly Wise: 12 A&B will be due on Friday. The Unit 12 test will be on Friday, 3/11.
Words Their Way: There will be no Words Their Way this week due to ISTEP+.
Writing: Students were given their Famous Hoosier assignments on Friday. By the end of this week, I would like for them to bring in 3-5 information sources (books, magazine articles, internet articles, etc.) about their person. It will work best if they have hard copies as we will be highlighting and taking notes on them. I am happy to print out articles if students e-mail them to me as a link or PDF. We will begin research and notes for Chapter 1 (Life of the Famous Hoosier) next week.
Reading
We are well into our Literature Circles and will finish the book on Monday. I have been very proud of the student-led discussions that they have been having! We will then spend some time working on final projects (to be done at school) before our author visit. We are also reading the book, Found, during our read aloud time. We are so excited to meet her!
Indiana History
We have finished studying the Underground Railroad, the Civil War, and Reconstruction. We will review this week (no tests due to ISTEP+) and take our test on 3/9.
Science
This week, we are beginning our study of our final science unit of the school year. This unit is a fun one as it covers animal behaviors, introduction to genetics, and adaptations. One small word of warning is that this chapter does discuss sex cells and that when the sex cell from a male and female join, the offspring inherits genes from both the mother and the father. There were quite a few questions about this so I reiterated what our book said and that you need a cell from a mom and a dad to make a baby, but told that that any other conversations about the topic needed to happen at home. If you get any, "Where do babies come from?" questions tonight, that is why! Our tentative test date will be Friday, 3/18.
Math
We will be wrapping up our study of fractions and probability by the end of the week and will take our unit test on Tuesday, 3/8. Our next chapter will cover area and perimeter.
