Assistant Principal's Message
Dear Oak Hills Families,
We had a wonderful day with our incoming kindergarten families this morning. They were able to see our school in action as we held it while everyone was in school. Current kindergartners got to work with their third grade buddies while their teachers showed the new little ones the ropes. Our building was open as new families toured with guides and got to see how Oak Hills works. Students of all grades were great role models as they met the new kindies and their parents around the school. We look forward to welcoming all of our students in August!
On another matter, Smarter Balanced testing will happen for 3rd, 4th, and 5th Grade students during the month of May. We are testing later than in previous years as we wanted to make sure we had adequate time to deliver content and because we are testing in the classrooms thereby no longer requiring the need of a coordinated testing schedule. We ask parents to make sure your child is well rested and has a good breakfast every morning. Please also bring your students on time as testing will generally happen in the morning. Additionally, please do not plan long trips during this time as we have a very short testing window to adhere to. Thank you for all your support on helping our student be successful with the SBAC test.
We hope you enjoyed the sunshine this week! Here's hoping for another great weekend!
Warm regards,
Jennifer DeMartino
Field Day
Dear Oak Hills Families,
Oak Hills Field Day is Friday, June 15th.
Please mark this date on your calendar.
We need lots of volunteers to run stations to make field day a success. Field day is a wonderful opportunity to join in a fun all-school event. A Field Day Sign Up Invitation will be sent out by our volunteer coordinator.
Field Day Schedule:
K-2 Volunteers 8:00-10:30
All-School Picnic (everyone invited) 11:00-11:30

PS-As a reminder, all volunteers must have a completed background check.
Thank you ahead of time for your invaluable help at this end of school year event!

Self-regulation
- Blue - this is low energy and if you are in this zone, it could mean you're tired or sad.
- Yellow - this indicates a heightened level of alertness; it could mean silly or nervous
- Red - this zone means out of control; it deals with intense emotions like anger
- Green - this is the ideal zone; alertness level is just right for learning
We teach students strategies for increasing or decreasing levels of alertness to match what the activity calls for. Take a look at Anna's presentation to learn more about self-regulation and how you can support your student! As we know, students who have high levels of self-regulation, also have higher academic achievement and fewer struggles with impulsivity.
Please Stop!

Volunteer Background Check Reminders
Just a reminder about which events need background checks this year. Thank you for your cooperation as we strive to keep our students safe. Don't forget to sign in at the computer each time you volunteer, even if it's just for a few minutes!
Field Day and 5th Grade Send Off:
Background checks are required for volunteers. Spectators with no background checks will be asked to stay in a designated area only. Your distance from the students will not provide you with great pictures if you are planning on taking pictures. Background checks will not be required for lunch with your student. Siblings can attend if you are not volunteering.
Field Trips:
Background checks are required.
Parent meetings and evening events:
No background checks are required. Siblings may attend.
I hope this clarifies things and thank you for your support. We love having you at our school, and we hope you will continue to volunteer at Oak Hills.
Movie Night at Oak Hills is on May 4 at 6pm
Spring Auction on June 8th
We are pleased to announce that we will be hosting an auction this year to support the construction of a new track at Oak Hills. Our auction, “Run like an Otter", will be held on June 8th, 2018.
In order to make this auction a success, we are asking for donations from families and local business owners. Please let us know if you have something you would be interested in donating! Do you have any gift cards left over from the holidays? Do you have a vacation home or time share that we could use in our live auction? Would your company want free publicity by donating items or services for our silent auction? Your donations are tax deductible and would make a big difference to our community.
We are also looking for auction sponsors. Sponsorship can be in any amount. This can be your employer, your business, or a friend of yours that would like to contribute to our school.
Finally, we are looking for volunteers to help. Please email us and learn how you can make this year’s auction a success! oakhillstrack@gmail.com
School Starts Early Next Year!
SPECIAL EDUCATION SUMMER PROGRAM AT OAK HILLS
Oak Hills Elementary School has been chosen host to the Special Education Summer Program for 2018. The program will be held in our location from July 9th through July 26th from 8:30am to 12:30pm. It will run Monday through Thursday but not on Friday.
Due to a full student/staff load, the parking lots will not be accessible to the community. The parking lots will be in use by the staff, the parents and school buses. Additionally, between the hours of 8:30am and 12:30pm, the playground will be closed to the community. This is for the safety of the special needs students attending summer school. Additionally, since students in K through 12th Grade will be attending this program, it is also for the safety of your children. We encourage our Oak Hills families to use the park across the school during the Summer Program hours and play on the Oak Hills playground during the late afternoon and evening hours.
Thank you for your understanding and flexibility with the parking lots and playground during the summer. We will continue to keep you posted with additional information regarding the Special Education Summer Program.
