Forest Lake Newsletter
April 2019
“Our students win, when we work as one!”
- Dr. Paul Nehrig - Principal
- Mr. David Sanford - Assistant Principal
Dear Panthers,
As you read this newsletter, we have begun the third week of a busy 4th quarter, full of learning, fun activities, and important events all packed into the remaining days of the school year. We have many updates and information in this month’s edition of the newsletter to help you stay connected. Please be sure to check your child’s ‘take-home folder’ or backpack nightly, take a look at our online calendar at our school website (http://myvolusiaschools.org/school/ForestLake/Pages/default.aspx), catch the weekly Panther Update phone message/email/text message on Sunday evenings, and stay in touch with your child’s teacher. There is still so much to learn and do before the end of the year, so please help us to help our students succeed through being present, on time, and ready to learn each day so they can give their best effort until the very last day of school.
Testing
We began FSA testing last week. Our 4th and 5th grade students took the FSA Writing test and our 3rd graders took the FSA Reading test. I’m so proud of our students for doing their best, of our teachers for preparing them well, and our testing team, headed by Mrs. Wagenhauser. We have about 3 weeks until the next FSA tests begin, so let’s make every day count!
Here is a brief summary of the upcoming assessment schedule:
May 1st & 2nd: Grades 4 & 5 FSA Reading
May 6th & 7th: Grades 3, 4 & 5 FSA Math
May 8th & 9th: Grade 5 NGSSS Science
Each test is given over 2 days, with Session 1 on the first day and Session 2 on the 2nd day. It’s very important for students to attend both days of each test. Our students will be ready for these assessments because of their hard work, the dedication of our teachers, and the support of our families.
News & Notes
In addition to the important testing information above, please note the following:
- If you are interested in serving on our School Advisory Council (SAC) for next year, please contact the school to let us know by Friday April 26th. The election window runs from April 29th to May 10th for the upcoming year.
- The window to participate in the annual Climate Survey has been extended to May 1st. We welcome your feedback! To take this brief, anonymous survey, please use the following link: https://eprovesurveys.advanc-ed.org/surveys/#/action/79394/6324 Thank you!
I hope you enjoy this month’s edition of the newsletter. I think you’ll agree that it’s exciting to see all the great things happening at Forest Lake because of our students, teachers, support staff and parents all working together. This is why we say, “Our students win, when we work as one!”
Sincerely,
Dr. Nehrig

Grade Level News
KINDERGARTEN
Spring has sprung in Kindergarten. We are learning about Plants. This includes sprouting seeds, planting seeds, and learning about the parts of a plant. In math we are counting to 100 by ones and tens, and in ELA we will be writing about animals.
We are heading into the home stretch with our SIPPS sight words. Continue to help your child learn their words and practice blending while reading their stories each night.
Our last field trip of the year will take us to the zoo on Friday, April 26th. If you have zoo passes, you will need to tell your child’s teacher and send a photo of the pass with your license picture on it. The prices are $17.00 for students ($11.00 for zoo, $5.00 for bus, $1.00 train ride), Chaperones are $15.00. Even with the pass, the cost will be $6.00 to pay for the bus and train ride. Remember that you must be a cleared volunteer to chaperone.
We are working hard to get ready for first grade So keep up the good work. We can’t believe we only have 8 weeks left!
FIRST GRADE
Only 9 weeks to go!!!! With so little time left, it is extremely important that your child is prompt and prepared for school every day. First grade is busy learning about living things, budgets, and the basic needs of animals and plants. In math, they are understanding that in adding two-digit numbers, one adds tens and tens, ones and ones; and sometimes it is necessary to compose a ten. By this time of the year our students should have mastered the first-grade sight words that have been sent home every week. Reading the SIPPS stories that have gone home will help the children increase their reading fluency. Be on the lookout for information about our end of the year activities. We will need lots of approved volunteers.
THIRD GRADE
Woo hoo! 3rd grade parents we did it! FSA reading is OVER and done. The students did very well with their behavior on the FSA. We were really proud of every single child. They can BREATH again!
April is going to be full of normal procedures and review for math. Our focus is to just freshen up on concepts that may have been challenging throughout the year. Please practice multiplication and division facts at home. FSA math testing will be on May 6th and 7th.
Make sure your calendars are marked for May 14th; it’s the day of our SeaWorld Field trip. Field Trip money is due by May 8th.
Some of the standards that we will be exploring in class are as follows:
Reading: LAFS.3.RI.1.2 Determine the main idea of a text; recount the key details and explain how they support the main idea. LAFS.3. L.3.5 Demonstrate understanding of word relationships.
Social Studies: SS.3. E.1.4 Distinguish between currencies used in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean.
Math: MAFS.3.OA.1.3 Use multiplication and division within 100 to solve world problems in situations involving equal groups, arrays, and measurement quantities,
Science: Describe how animals are adapted to respond when changes occur in the environment (e.g., hibernation, migration, shedding, birth, color change). • explain why animals are adapted to respond to seasonal changes in the environment (to increase the chance of survival).
Writing: Working on an informative writing piece on the history and functions of telephones. They will identify task, audience, and purpose. We have a lot going on but we got this! We are excited to cruise through the last nine weeks
FIFTH GRADE
Hello Parents! As we enter testing season please help us keep spirits up by reminding students that they can do this! Please don’t forget a goodnight’s sleep and breakfast on testing days. Please keep in mind the following important dates: Reading FSA will be May 1st-2nd, Math FSA will be May 6th-7th and Science 8th-9th. All Field Trip permission slips April 12th. All monies must be turned by May 9th! We can’t wait to celebrate with them on May 15th at Universal. 5th Grade ceremony will be on May 30th.
