i believe this play does show the attainability of the american dream. The family was a typical african american family that didnt have anything living in a apartment where they had to share a bathroom with other familys. The family got a lucky break when big Walter insurance money came which was a check for $10,000 which help them obtain their american dream which was moving to a good home for their family and having a little money to spend. This show that the american dream is attainable because if a family that barely had nothing work at jobs where they got paid basicly nothing but still manage to become happy and stay together is really attaining the american dream which i think is being happy.
I believe the theme of the story is doing whatever it takes to attain your dream. For example Walter Lee jr is doing anything in his power to become rich to support his family to give them the nicer things in life. i believe this because in the book walter say " dont my wife deserves pearls around her neck", which is stating that he want to be able to afford nice things for his wife. Another example is Benetha want's to become a doctor in the movie she said " when i was a kid we use to got sleding down concrete stairs and one day a boy feel and split his head wide open and when i seen the boy again the split was fixed and it was nothing but a scar and thats what made me want to be a doctor to help an heal people".
man vs society
This play is showing the lack of opportunity that african americans are given. This is something that Walter struggles with particularly as he tries to get ahead in life and build a future for himself and his family. a quote from the book to show this is "I was lookin' in the mirror and thinking about it I'm thirty-five years old I been married eleven years and I got a boy who sleeps in the living room and all I got to give him is stories about how rich white people live"(Hansberry pg34). A quote from the movie is "You wouldn’t understand yet son, but your daddy’s gonna make a transaction a business transaction that’s going to change our lives".
characterization & quest for the american dream
walter feels as if he is just a typical african american male with nothing and his dream is to become rich and support his family. a quote from the book to support this is "In fact, here’s another fifty cent buy yourself some fruit today or take a taxicab to school or something"(hansberry pg31).A quote from the movie to support this is "Do you know what this money means to me? Do you know what this money can do for us? Mama , Mama I want so many things"(hansberry). Also Beneatha is trying to make her way in life her dream is to become a doctor. A quote from the movie to show this is "Get over it what are you talking about, Ruth? Listen, I’m going to be a doctor. I’m not worried about who I’m going to marry yet"(hansberry). and a quote from the movie to show this is "That was what one person could do for another, fix him up sew up the problem, make him all right again. That was the most marvelous thing in the world I wanted to do that. I always thought it was the one concrete thing in the world that a human being could do. Fix up the sick, you know and make them whole again. This was truly being God I wanted to cure. It used to be so important to me. I wanted to cure. It used to matter. I used to care. I mean about people and how their bodies hurt"(hansberry).
