Year 5 Newsletter
Term 1 - Friday 2nd September 2016
Welcome to the Year 5 Newsletter
Dear Parents,
Welcome to the first edition of the Year 5 newsletter for 2016/17.
Thank you to everyone who came and introduced themselves at the 'Meet the Teacher' evening last night. It was great for the teachers to see so many faces. For those who couldn't make it, not to worry, as we've included a copy of the slides on the Year 5 homepage of the VLE.
Important reminders:
Please ensure your child is wearing appropriate school uniform. A reminder that no jewellery is to be worn to school, except for watches.
- Swimming - swim caps are compulsory for any child will long hair. This is a regulation of the HKU Pool. Not only do they protect the pool filters but also prevents the possibility of children getting their hair caught underwater. Children MUST wear either the old Kennedy swimming costume/shorts or the new purple jammers. No other swimming attire for them is acceptable.

Central Idea: Understanding how we learn helps us to take more responsibility.
Lines of Inquiry: An inquiry into...
different ways of learning (responsibility, trust)

- Apply place value to partition and rename numbers to tenths and hundredths.
- Recognise and order numbers to millions or beyond.
- Recognise, model and order decimal fractions to hundredths or beyond.
- Round decimal fractions to the nearest whole number.
Strand
We will also be working through data handling as part of our strand focus in this unit. Data handling is also embedded in our UOI and the children will be learning skills through the following objectives:
- Collect, organise and represent data (including bar, line graphs and pie charts) where one object or symbol can represent many data values.
- Interpret and draw conclusions from data using range, scale and mode on graphs.
Children can also support their learning in the classroom by completing the Mathletics activities online. Well done to all the children who have already collected awards for their participation so far!
