Summary of Reform Movement

at the beginning of the new ear near the 1800's, during this time period a new reform movement was built, the social reform, quickly spread and was very know . This reform movement was aimed especially at the conditions of prisons, punishment for crimes, treatment of people who are sick in the mind and better institutions for them, and state of being locked in a prison for money owed. Conditions of jails were very dangerous and unstable because the cells were often very small with poorly prepared keeping yourself/something clean facilities, and large amounts of people were crammed into them. The result was basically a filth hole destroyed with disease and overpowering stink. Punishment for crimes were often extreme in which those who did/done/performed an offense often suffered huge torture or death. As for people who are sick in the mind, they suffered the worst unavoidable, already-decided futures being that they were carefully thought about/believed with his or her usual of evil and therefore were whipped,called/labeled, and chained in cells in institutions not at all prepared to handle them. Lastly, people who were unable to pay any money owed piled up were thrown into owing lots of money or prisons where supplies were totally terrible. These actions called the attention of people who work to improve things to improve conditions in prisons and the treatment of people who are sick in the mind, lessen punishments for crimes, create better institutions, and permanently end money-owners' prisons.

Societal Problems

Dorothea Dix held a loyal to God hour for women in the East Cambridge jail and discovered that some inmates were chained in a dirty, cold cell simply because they were sick in the mind. People often thought that the sick in the mind were cursed with unclean spirits and therefore, were chained in jails or poor-houses with sane people.
state of being locked in a prison for money owed was a big problem: many very poor people got old in very dirty prisons for owing less than one dollar. Money-owner's prison were very terrible, scary being that they gave/given no food, furniture, or fuel for their inmates.

Objectives of the Movement

To reform punishment for crimes, conditions of jails, treatment of people who are sick in the mind and better institutions to help them, and state of being locked in a prison for money owed.

Tactics

Legal ways of thinking/basic truths/rules dealing with people who are sick in the mind were also reformed that a criminal act should be punished only if the offender knew right from wrong. like in 1835- Richard Lawrence, believing that Jackson's attack on the Second Bank of the United States had prevented him from getting money that would have enabled him to claim the English seat of power of a king or queen, fired two pistols, that both misfire, at President Andrew Jackson. The court found Lawrence to be sick in the mind and confined him to a mental hospital for treatment instead of criminal prosecution. People who work to improve things began to view crime as a social problem believing it was the duty of a kind community of people/all good people in the world to sympathize and show patience to criminals instead of torturing them.

Initial successes of the movement

Successes of the Social Reform movement involve the improvement of prison conditions, better facilities and institutions to handle certain law-breakers including people who are sick in the mind, and the permanent end of money-owers' prisons. Important figures within this movement include Dorothea Dix, whose described/explained accounts of conditions in prisons and mental hospitals resulted in improved conditions and the idea that the dangerously mentally ill were sick in the mind and William Ladd, whose leadership within the American Peace community of people/all good people in the world in the end gave improvements in the internal organizations for total of everything or everyone security.
