Security Audit - Arrival and Dismissal

Bell Families,

Prior to school opening in August, a security audit team came to Bell to conduct a traffic study, and recommendations were made for the design of arrival and dismissal procedures. The plan was put in place at the time of construction traffic and with the idea that Bell enrollment would be around 550 students.

I have been observing our arrival and dismissal procedures over the last 12 weeks and have decided to invite the security audit team back out to observe now that our enrollment is 700 students and we have more information on the number of car riders, walkers, and bikers we have. As you can imagine, this looks very different than I suspect it did in August, and it is our responsibility to continually monitor our systems to ensure the safety of our children. I want you to be aware that you may see some unfamiliar faces observing at these times over the next few weeks; these are Denton ISD employees and will be wearing Denton ISD identification badges.

Based on the recommendations of the security audit team, changes may be made to our arrival and dismissal procedures to begin after Spring Break. We are open to any changes that will increase student safety and security. We will communicate these changes well in advance of Spring Break so that you can plan accordingly. If you have suggestions for consideration, please share those with me at lshapiro@dentonisd.org.

We appreciate your continued support and thank you for sharing your children with us! It is a great responsibility that we appreciate and take very seriously.

Sincerely,

Lauren Shapiro

Principal

Justice

This month we are focusing on the character trait of justice with our students. Each day on announcements we talk about equality and fairness for all students and how we each play an important role in practicing justice. Caring and integrity are woven throughout as well. Thank you in advance for continuing those conversations at home!

Some of the quotes we use to help spring conversation include:

"You must be the change you wish to see in the world." - Mohandas Gandhi

"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." - Martin Luther King, Jr.

First Place Artist and Author Winners Recognized

Congratulations to our Adopt-A-School 4th and 5th Grade Young Artists and Authors! First place winners were honored alongside other campus first place winners at evening events the last two weeks. This year's topic was "My School is Great Because..." You can see the winning pieces pictured above. We are so proud of how hard our students are working this year and the growth they have shown. We hope you enjoy their work as much as we do!

Terry Rahn, Bell Elementary Teacher of the Year

We are so proud of Ms. Terry Rahn for being named Bell Elementary's 2016-2017 Teacher of the Year! She was selected by her colleagues to receive this year's honor. Ms. Rahn is the kind of teacher who would do anything and try anything to help her students succeed. She works tirelessly to connect with and motivate her students. If you have met her, you know that "above and beyond" only scratches the surface of what she offers as an educator. Congratulations, Ms. Rahn!
