Bedminster Bobcat

Reading Olympics

We would like to congratulate our Reading Olympics team – the Bedminster Bobcats. For the past few months they have prepared for the county-wide event by reading and sharing from a list of 45 books. Their dedication, effort, and teamwork enabled them to win a first-place ribbon in the recent county-wide event. Their behavior and participation showed their kindness, manners, and good sportsmanship. They are a credit to their families and our school community.

Tessellating Patterns with Mrs. Dworak

Big image
In the afternoons of math PSSA week Mrs . Dworak, the mom of fifth grader Charlotte D., came to each fifth grade math class to teach the students how to create art with tessellating patterns. In the fall the students explored tessellations (a tiling or pattern that covers a surface with no gaps or overlaps) with geometric shapes. With Mrs. Dworak they got to make more creative tessellations with non-standard patterns. We thank her for taking the time to share her art experience with us!

Spirit of America Day

Spirit of America Day(Field Day) will be Friday, May 20, 2016 with a rain date on Friday, May 27, 2016. Please make sure to wear your classroom spirit color on this day. Also, students should wear comfortable clothes and sneakers, and bring a water bottle with their name on it. More information about this day will be coming home soon.

Theater Club

Big image
Under the direction of Mrs. Lorish and Mr. Sadowsky, students from grades 1 and 4 performed an adapted version of the Lynn Cherry story, "The Great Kapok Tree." Since January, these dedicated performers have been busy learning their lines, practicing reading fluency, making costumes, and practicing where to go and what to say. The hours of hard work cumulated on April 28th with a performance for the Bedminster students and an after school hours performance for the performers families.

Mrs. Gray's Music Class

Big image
"Fishing for Rhythms" The first and second grade students in Mrs. Gray's music class went fishing for rhythms. During PSSA testing we continue to teach music concepts but try to keep the noise level low so that the "test- takers" are not interrupted. The students mastered their rhythm reading skills and had a lot of fun at the same time.

PTG

Brain Food

Big image
Thank you to everyone who sent in snacks for the PTG's "Buckets of Brain Food.” The buckets of snacks were provided to all 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students each day during PSSA testing. Teachers told us that “The kids loved the snacks,” and “It made the kids excited for the PSSAs.” We also received a lovely group of Thank You cards from a very appreciative class of test takers. It seems they really enjoyed the "Brain Food!"

Volunteer Spotlight

Big image
Bedminster Elementary is blessed to have so many wonderful volunteers. Andrea Yunger-Walters has been volunteering in many ways since 2007. A huge thank you to Andrea for helping to make our school the extraordinary place that it is!
From Andrea:
My daughter Kaitlyn started kindergarten in 2007 and that's when I started to volunteer at Bedminster. I began as a head homeroom parent and was a homeroom parent for every one of Kaitlyn's classes, I continue to do so for my son Ryan, who started Kindergarten in 2013. For a few years I was the homeroom parent organizer for all homeroom parents in school. Also when Ryan was in kindergarten I helped the students with improving their writing skills as they wrote about what they did on the weekend. I started volunteering for the Pet Show in 2010 which is a wonderful long standing Bedminster tradition, and I still continue to do so. I was the Market Day chairperson, (which no longer exists) from 2010-2015. When Kaitlyn was in 2nd grade and also for Ryan this year I volunteered to assist with 2nd grade swimming. This is lots of fun! One of things that I am most closely associated with is the Book Fair, which I have chaired since 2013. Along with this, I have been volunteering in the library since 2014. This is one of my favorite ways to spend time at the school! Around that same time I began volunteering for lunch duty, it’s so great to see your child interact with their friends and get to know other kids at lunch. I have helped out with Race for Education since 2009 both in the classroom and on race day, and I volunteer to help hang art work for the festival of the arts show. Lastly I served as Vice President on the PTG board 2010-2012 and President 2012-2013. Currently I am a member at large on the PTG Board. There are a multitude of ways to volunteer at Bedminster, as little or as much as you are able. I consider myself very fortunate to have a career where I can take time off to volunteer at school, although sometimes it can be quite a juggling act. I enjoy helping out at the school and my children have always been excited to see me there. I can't tell you how many times they have asked if I would be in to help with this or that. It's also nice to get to know other children whether I'm helping at lunch duty or in the library.

Volunteer Appreciation

Big image
April 10th through April 16th, 2016 marked National Volunteer Week, and the Bedminster PTG took the opportunity to reach out to thank each of our almost 100 dedicated volunteers. Although it would be impossible to adequately express how grateful we are to have the support of so many wonderful individuals supporting us in our goals to provide our students with the best possible educational and social experience possible, we sent each of our volunteers a small token of our appreciation that we hope they enjoy! We also entered each of our volunteers into a drawing to win our “Take a Break” gift basket, which included many items including restaurant and movie theatre gift cards. Our lucky winner was Judy King, whose name was drawn on her birthday! Congratulations Judy and thanks again to you and all of our volunteers for everything that you do!

2016/2017 PTG Officer Elections

Paper nominations were sent home with students, and should now have been returned. Mrs. DiPaolo (or her designee) will contact each nominee to confirm they are interested in running. The ballots will go out 5/2 and need to be returned 5/9. The ballots will be counted by individuals within the school district but those other than PTG Board Members or Bedminster staff. The 2016/2017 Board will be announced at the May 19th board meeting. Congratulations!

We received so many wonderful logos for this year’s Race for Education T-Shirt Logo Contest! The designs were reviewed by a small committee who were looking for designs that depicted the Race and this school year’s theme – “We All Fit Together.” After the extremely difficult task of narrowing it down to four designs, the students had an opportunity to vote for their favorite. We would like to congratulate John W. (5th grade) for creating the winning design which will be on all of the Race for Education T-Shirts this year. We send a huge thank you to all of the fourth and fifth grade students who participated and encourage everyone to keep an eye out for all of the designs that were submitted as they will be displayed throughout the school during Spirit Week!
