"Why, you thieving rascal!"
I chose this quote because this was the first words Travis ever said to Old Yeller.
The setting of this story takes place in the past, around the 1860's. It takes place in a hill county in Salt Licks Texas.
There are 4 main characters in the story, Travis, Little Arliss, Mama, and Old Yeller, but these aren't the only characters in the book. There is also a key but small character, Papa who goes out on a trip in the beginning of the book to sell cattle for money for the family.
While Papa is out on cattle drive, his wife and sons Travis and Little Arliss are on their ranch in Salt Licks Texas. Then a runaway dog comes into their life. At first Travis was trying to drive off the dog. Until he warmed up to it after it saved his brother from a bear attack. As Travis and the dog start to grow closer to each other, a serious case of rabies emerges and concerns the family.
In this book there was a major conflict that made the characters lives very difficult. Well at the beginning of the story Travis's dad leaves to sell cattle. So now Travis is the man of the house, but then a serious case of rabies break out and gets out of control!
After reading this book I realized that the theme of this story is love. I think the theme is love because throughout the story it shows us how passionate Travis and Old Yeller's love is for each other. If you have a pet that you love so much that you would die for it then I think you will have a deep connection with this book.
I personally HATE reading! But shockingly I enjoyed reading this book. I would rate this book a 10 out of 10 making it one of the best books I have ever read. The ending of the story shocked me. I was not expecting it at all I would've never guessed it. But it was one of the best endings I have read
