Director's Details - Week 15

Classical Conversations of Burien

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30 (KJV)

I'm so thankful for each of you! If your household is anything like mine, the post holiday return to life has been a bit bumpy. I'm preparing to pull out Sarah MacKenzie's Teaching from Rest to reread it. I need to approach our educating from a perspective of relationship over to-do list. Aaah, the joy of a life of continuing to learn and take captive my thoughts to make them obedient to the Lord as I disciple my children. What a blessing to know that we aren't in this alone. The Lord will carry our burdens and give us all we need to raise our children for him.

Essentials Open House for Upcoming families

For families who will be moving into the Essentials years next year, we will be hosting an Essentials open house on January 21. Please plan to stay that afternoon. Parents you are invited to sit in our class and see what it's all about. I will be asking for extra moms to stick around that afternoon and help with the extra kiddos in childcare.

Geography Map Tracing Challenge!

Use your time wisely - Practice your map drawing over break!

What? Practice your geography skills by tracing, blob mapping or free hand drawing the world or specific memory work. Bring your work to CC. Mrs. Chang will donate 5 cents for every map turned in. We will donate the final sum to a local charity AND we'll have a party to celebrate our fantastic work!

When? October 29 - February 11

Why? To sharpen our map skills AND to raise money for local international families

**There will be a jar and a folder for tallying maps drawn. Please tally for every 5 cents earned per map and put one corn kernel per 5 cents in the jar. You may submit your maps or keep them. We will also have a map of Africa where we will color in a country for each dollar earned. Please track your own child's progress. If your child is receiving donations from someone besides me, track that with tally marks and corn kernels but keep the funds until I announce that we will be submitting the donation.

Foundations to Challenge Connections

“Our culture is obsessed with technology and entertainment. As classical, Christian educators, we need to be thoughtful about our education methods. In our generation, a tide has been turning—a tide that has eroded the foundation of true education and replaced it with a learning model as ineffective as shifting sands. I call this replacement model ‘edu-tainment.’ What do I mean? Let me expound. Unlike the proven classical model, which teaches through modeling, dialoguing, and critical thinking, edu-tainment attempts to educate using flashy tools and games that grab a student’s attention. However, much like television, the tools and games of edu-tainment leave students in a passive state of merely receiving stimuli. No real transfer or processing of knowledge—skills critical to a successful learning journey—takes place in students’ minds.

“Classical educators have referred to this approach as “filling a bucket”—pouring information into or around students (the bucket) until they can’t take anymore. Students become passive receivers—a bucket that overflows without retaining. In the long term, this filling-focused approach is unsatisfying and unsuccessful for students, leaving their spirits disengaged and their minds disinterested in life’s great learning adventure.

“In contrast, Classical Conversations programs, tutors, and parents strive to light the learning fire, to engage students in the process. We accomplish this primarily through modeling, working along side our students with extensive dialogue and encouragement. The final result—“final” because it takes a while!—is engaged students able to work through their studies independently and confidently because they have had a sound model and encouraging mentors.”
