"NOT ONE MORE" Presentation
Monday, October 7th in the school gymnasium, John F. Kennedy Catholic High School presented a powerful presentation by the Seattle chapter of “Not One More”, a national educational nonprofit started in Simi Valley, California, by two mothers who lost their children to drug overdose and a drug-related accident. Through their grief, frustration, and anger they recognized the need for change and education in their community as more and more young lives were being lost to drug addiction. There are now 6 chapters of this non-profit across the country, including our local Seattle chapter formed in September 2014.
Their mission is to educate our community about the hazards of illegal and legal pill use, and other drug use, including heroin, so we can guide our children to a path free of devastation, incarceration, and death. They help young people become role models for others, and help those struggling with addiction lift themselves to a place of recovery and peace.
As students were entering and being seated the presentation began with a remembrance video played to music, showing the faces of young people lost to drugs. The first of four panel speakers, Seattle Police Officer Steve Redmond, founder of Code4NW, was followed by a mother who lost her child to drugs, and a brief video interlude of the documentary video “Overtaken”, with its emphasis on dangerous pill use. After this video we heard from a recovering young person, and then an alcohol-drug counselor, followed by a brief question and answer session.
Students are encouraged to follow up with their high school counselor with any questions or concerns.
Career News
This year, the counseling department has been working collaboratively with a team of faculty and staff to develop new and exciting ways for our students to increase their awareness of different career fields. This “Career Initiative” team plans to work together with alumni, current and former Kennedy Catholic parents, and community members to bring a wealth of different career opportunities to our students. One of the ways we are reaching out to students is by inviting guest speakers into classrooms to speak about their careers and how it relates to the subjects students are learning. We are also beginning to develop ideas for how we can integrate our students into career fields outside of the classroom through programs such job shadowing or internship experiences. While these plans are only in the beginning phases, we are excited by the prospect of building lasting relationships with members of the Kennedy Catholic community who can offer our students a priceless experience.
