From Mr. Clemente
Dear Winter Park Band families,
I hope everyone had a restful and relaxing Spring Break! It's hard to believe we are already at the start of the final quarter of the 2021-2022 school year.
A couple items to wrap up from the week before we left for break. On Monday 3/7, the Orchestra Winds and Percussion joined in performance with the Park Philharmonic at FOA District 8 Orchestra MPA. The orchestra earned straight Superior ratings both on stage and in sight reading. This actually completed a run of all superior ratings for the concert ensembles of the WPHS Band, Orchestra, and Chorus programs for the ensembles sent to MPA this year. Way to go!
Also prior to Spring Break, the auditions for the Annual Senior Concerto Competition were held on Monday, 3/7. We had four students give outstanding performances during their auditions: Carter Hetz (alto saxophone solo), Kaia Leavitt (alto saxophone solo), Kang Muscatello (trombone solo), and Cole Spencer (horn solo, self-composed). The fine performances by all made for much discussion and a very difficult decision for the panel of adjudicators. The winner of this year's competition who will perform their concerto with the Wind Symphony on the Spring Concert is:
- Carter Hetz, alto saxophone solo, Scaramouche by Darius Milhaud
Congratulations!
We truly hit the ground running this week with lots of events taking place between Monday and Saturday.
- Tomorrow, Monday, 3/21, students who have chosen to move on to State Solo & Ensemble MPA will perform at Vero Beach HS. Please be attentive to the itinerary to not be late for the bus in the morning and be sure you bring everything you need to school!
- Drum Major Auditions for the 2022-2023 Winter Park Band will take place after school on Wednesday, 3/22. Looking forward to watching your excellent preparation show through in your auditions!
- Friday, 3/25 the Winter Guard wraps up their competitive season performing at FFCC Championships at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach. In order to help send them off to Championships in style, the Guard invites all Band families to come watch their Friends and Family Performance on Thursday, 3/24 at 6:30 PM in the Freshman Campus Gym.
- Three of our students will perform this weekend with this year's All-County Jazz Ensembles. Rehearsals take place Thursday evening, during the school day Friday, and the festival concludes with sound checks and the performance on Saturday at 3 PM. All rehearsals and performance take place at West Orange HS. Good luck Jacob, Kaia, and Kang!
I ask all Band families, if you have not done so already, to please look at your student's financial account in Cut Time. All accounts are now up to date and accounts can be viewed on Cut Time anytime, 24/7 by logging into the Cut Time website. All financial obligations for this school year are now past due and must be alleviated either before graduation for seniors or before Band Registration Night in May for underclassmen.
Let's make it a great week!
Mr. Clemente

Pride of the Wildcats - Winter Park Band Fleet Vehicle Support and Improvement
We are very proud of our Operations side of the Winter Park Band. We have a dedicated group of parents that take the Winter Park Band & Color Guard to all their events. However, without the use of the large tractor trailer that transports our equipment to and from each marching band event and the small trailer for color guard the task would be next to impossible.
Through the years, the operations group has made many changes to the trailers to improve the functionality for the Winter Park Band. Historically, all of the monies have been raised through private contributions of a select groups of parents and through the Alumni Foundation. Because of this the need of a full fundraiser event to deflect the cost of the band operations was never really until now.
In effort to maintain our large trailer’s top-notch condition, we are planning to do some MAJOR repairs and improvements to the trailer that is now in its 15th year of service for WPHS band. Additionally, we need to either replace (preferable) the small trailer or make it road worthy again.
Some of the items on our list of improvements are costly, including:
- Repairing some minor damage to larger trailer
- Repainting the lower section of the large trailer
- Rewrapping the upper section of the large trailer
- Replace wheel bearings on front axle
- Moving the back stairway to the back of the trailer
- Replacing or repairing the small trailer
- And other improvements to keep our kids and volunteers safe.
Since we are re-wrapping the large trailer, we will be selling sponsor spots on the larger trailer to defray the cost. There are 10 spots that are available for $1,000 each and the entire front of the trailer for $5,000. These opportunities are a great way to support the Winter Park Band and they are also tax deductible.
Please contact Keith Gavin at kgavin@sscands.com for further information on donations or to provide the goods or services to the improvements that are so desperately needed.
We will be also seeking volunteers to help at a Trailer Work- Days throughout the month of January. We will be repairing minor body damage, painting the trailer and removing the old logos. Please contact Keith Gavin @ kgavin@sscands.com if you can assist.
