Burning Magnesium

By: Faith Howell and Kiara Mayers

What happened?

When my partner and I put the magnesium to the Bunsen burner flame, the magnesium turned the fire a bright red then into a bright white flame. Don't look at the flame though, it will burn your eyes!

How did the flame change the magnesium?

The flame melted the magnesium into a white, pasty, blob. The magnesium started off in a stiff board, the flame made it into a white substance that was unable to hold its shape, because of this it fell off the clip and onto the table. While burning! This new substance is called magnesium oxide.
