The Spencer Scoop
Spencer Elementary - January 6, 2023
Dear Spencer Families,
We are incredibly excited to introduce our newest member of the Spencer Elementary family, Ivan! Ivan is a medium goldendoodle and has been working hard to finish his advanced training so that he can start training to work in the school and master all of his commands. Once he finishes this this final training program he will be ready to join his handler, Mrs. Phillips and her family.
Ivan will start school at Spencer in the spring. He will be spending his day with Mrs. Phillips or in the office when he starts. His transition to the building will be a slow process to ensure he has ample time to become comfortable with his new home and also his new job at Spencer. We want to be sure Ivan is comfortable and well adjusted before he begins visiting other classrooms. Rest assured, students and staff will still be able to interact often, as he will be hanging out in the halls, the playground and other places around the building.
We are currently looking for sponsors for Ivan. If you would like your family name or business on the vest and our website, social media, and board room plaque (donation of $1000) we are currently accepting donations. Ivan will be wearing this vest every day and also at all events; it is a great way to advertise your business or family donation. If you are interested in a tax deductible donation, please contact Mrs. Phillips or Mrs. Storey. We would love to add your name to Ivan’s vest! Email: Alicia Phillips at phillipsa@brightonk12.com or Karen Storey at storeyk@brightonk12.com

Spencer Singers
Good Afternoon Spencer Singers Families,
We have a regular rehearsal tomorrow morning. We will be singing the national anthem at the BHS Hockey Game next week. Here are the details you will need:
Time/Date: Meet at 5:45 p.m. (6 p.m. game time) Wednesday, January 11th
Where: Kensington Valley Ice House
10540 Citation Dr, Brighton, MI 48116
We will gather in the open area near the Varsity Locker Room.
We will probably sing at the team bench.
Tickets: Only Spencer Singer family members who are staying to watch
the game need to buy a ticket. Singers staying to watch do not need to buy a ticket. Families who are only coming for the
national anthem and then leaving do not need to buy a ticket.
Clothing: Singers should wear their Spencer Singers t-shirt or their
Roadrunner Run shirt.
Parking: Can be difficult.
Behavior Expectations: This is going to be a large group of very excited
kids in a noisy environment. While we wait and gather, I would
like students to stay together with their families and not go
running off to other areas of the arena. Parents, I ask for your
help and assistance with monitoring student behavior.
After the Anthem: After the anthem, families not staying to watch the
game can go. Families staying to watch the game can go enjoy
the game. I will not be staying to watch the game. Any Singer
staying for the game needs to have their grown up with them.
Thank you for supporting your Singer(s),
Bonnie Muszynski

Remember Your Family Pass
Please remember to bring your Family Pass with you EVERY day you come to pick up your student! Officer Ken will be asking to see your Family Pass number when you pick up your student before the end of the day. We also frequently have substitute teachers that will not recognize you and will send you to the office to get a temporary pass before releasing your child to you.
Request from the Office
We are seeing an increase in phone calls at the end of the day with a change in your student's transportation plan. Every call we have to make into your child's classroom is an interruption for the entire class. This disrupts their learning time and their teacher’s valuable instruction time. Please send a note in with your student if there is a change in their after school transportation or contact the office earlier in the day (preferably before lunch) so we can pass a note to your child's teacher on their way to lunch. This will eliminate the calls into the classroom and the disruption of class instruction. Thank you for your cooperation.

Spencer Showcase Talent Show
Welcome back, Roadrunners! We hope you had a great break. We are looking forward to lots of fun events for the remainder of the year, starting off with our 2nd Annual Spencer Showcase! This is a talent show of sorts for the students to share hidden talents or skills with other Spencer families. Auditions for this event will take place from 4-6pm on January 18th. We will have a small panel of judges to make sure all acts are school appropriate and somewhat thought-out ahead of time. All acts must be under 2 minutes, so we need to make sure students are prepared and ready to go! These could be anything from musical talents to juggling or magic tricks and anything in between. The final show will take place at Spencer on the evening of January 25th from 6-8pm! See attached flyer for all details.
Detroit Red Wings School of the Game
Detroit Red Wings School of the Game tickets are still available! The game will be Sunday, March 12th (no school Monday the 13th). This game is also kids day! In addition to all the perks we will receive for being the School of the Game, there will be other fun things happening for the kids. This program is run slightly differently than the last time we participated. We only have 250 tickets (150 Upper Level, 100 Lower Level)! Tickets will be issued first come, first serve. All tickets are digital and will be assigned to the email address provided on your form. If you are interested in participating in this event, please fill out the order form and send it in with your student as soon as possible - all orders are due February 3rd! If we sell all tickets, we will create a sign-up to gauge interest in securing a second block of seats. As of Thursday 1/5, we have 104 Upper Level and 37 Lower Level tickets remaining. Once I receive an order form and payment, I will send you a confirmation email.Lost & Found
Big shout out to Melanie Brayski for taking the time to clean, organize, and post all the lost and found items over break. If you are missing something, she has created a lovely sign-up genius for you to easily claim your items! All the photos have a letter near the top of the page for each group and each item has a number. Identify your item by letter and number, with your student's name and teacher (ie A-3, Bob Jones, Mrs. Smith's class) in the SUG and she will get it back to your student. Check it out here!

Kindergarten Round Up
Counselor's Corner
I am so excited to continue working with students this year to help facilitate and promote growth and learning! I am providing classroom lessons, small group activities, and individual support this school year.
As a reminder, your school counselor is here to support children in all areas of mental wellness that impacts their success in the classroom. We work with individuals as needs arise. If your child is struggling at school, we will work together with the classroom teacher to determine whether or not school-based services would be beneficial. We may also be able to offer resources or contacts if your family believes that outside support will best meet your child's or families needs.
The Elementary Counselor Team also has the BAS Elementary Counseling website for ideas and resources to be used at home! Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns that you may have, and I will do my best to support your child.

Extra Change of Clothes
Parents - THANK YOU for packing a change of clothes in your child's backpack every day. Now that the weather is changing, please make sure that the clothes you pack are weather appropriate. This is for ALL grades, you never know when your student may have a nosebleed, or lose a tooth, or spill food on their shirt, or find a mud puddle outside, or have an accident. We have already had to contact quite a few families to come up with a change of clothing. If your student keeps a change of clothes in their backpack, then we can take care of it here, otherwise we will need you to bring up a change of clothing. Thank you for your cooperation.
