Weekly Reminders
Tardies and dress code violations are accumulating consequences. Please encourage students to be on time to classes, and check their attire before they leave. Dress code issues we are seeing are below:
- Ripped jeans- any jeans that have rips or frays at or above mid thigh will be not be allowed unless the student has leggings, tights, shorts or a patch underneath them. (Parents, please help with this by making sure students are not wearing these to school without the appropriate under-jean covering).
- Crop tops- any tops that expose the midriff either while at rest or while students arms are raised are not permitted without a tank top or another shirt underneath.
- Hoodies- hoodies may be worn in school, but the hood must remain down in the building.
- Hats/bandanas/head coverings- none of the items listed are allowed except in the interest of religious purposes or with principal approval. Headbands may be worn.
- Shorts- shorts are allowed provided the length is past mid thigh.
In modified Phase One, there are no student deliveries during the school day. The school will not be able to accept any items (including but not limited to lunches, water bottles, notebooks, backpacks, technology, athletic gear, etc).

KVA Students- DLAs
If your student is currently KVA, District Learning Assessments (DLAs) will be administered via Aware in Eduphoria. District Learning Assessments are designed to gather evidence of student learning and are used to identify students’ strengths and weaknesses as well as indicate any curriculum, instructional, or programmatic implications. To assist your student with navigating Eduphoria please use this link to access the Student Guide to Online Testing & Supports.
Thank you so much for your assistance.

From the Counselors
October is National Bullying Prevention Month. Please see the attached flyer for resources!
8th Grade Parents
In a few weeks, Mrs. Jernberg will be sitting down individually with students to start discussing and creating a possible 4-year plan for high school. Please start discussing with your child the following information:
- What are their plans after High School? Future career?
- Possible college(s)
- Possible electives they want to take in High School
These questions will help get your child thinking about their future which will then help me guide your child for their high school future. Please reference the 2020-2021 Course Catalog, pages 7-39 for more information on High School Graduation Requirements and Endorsements:
http://www.katyisd.org/dept/campusadmin/Documents/Course_Catalog_2020-2021.pdf.
Using last year’s course catalog will be useful for you to use until the 2021-2022 Course Catalog comes out in January.
Once I have met with all of the current Face to Face students, I will be contacting our students that are attending KVA to set up zoom meetings with your child.
Normally, this meeting does not happen until the second semester when students are picking their Freshman classes with the High School Counselors. Due to the unknown this year, I want to start on it now since it will take me a little more time with zoom meetings, sanitization between each student and other safety precautions. My goal is to have met with all the 8th graders by the end of the first semester.
Once we are in the spring semester, I will be updating the 4-year plan based on the Freshman courses your child picks and sending home a copy for you to look at and sign.
I look forward to guiding your 8th grader for their future.

All entries must be virtually submitted by November 9th.
Safety Concerns
Non-Compliance with Mask Requirement or Other Safety Protocols
Katy ISD is offering parents the option of virtual or in-person instruction. Students who do not comply with safety protocols in place for in-person instruction will be transitioned to Katy Virtual Academy for the duration of the grading period. KVA students participating in in-person school related activities before and after the start of the instructional day must also follow the same safety protocols. Students who do not wear masks/face coverings as required by District safety protocols will not be allowed to participate in school related activities. Should a student have a medical condition that would preclude him/her from wearing a mask, the parent is requested to provide the campus nurse documentation from their medical provider.

Attendance
Reminder: To be counted present, all KVA students are required to participate in the synchronous learning for each class period daily for the entire class period or until released by their teacher. They must be on time to the Zoom meeting. Teachers of KVA students are not issuing tardies, and will count a student absent after five minutes from the start of class. Because a KVA zoom does not have a set amount of time, it is critical for students to be on and receiving first teach or an explanation of the assignment at the very beginning of the lesson.
An absence occurs anytime a student does not attend their regularly scheduled class, whether in KVA or in-person instruction. All students must provide either written documentation (note/email) or a phone call from a parent/guardian for all absences. Please refer to the Katy ISD Secondary Student Handbook for detailed information for reporting an absence and guidelines for making up assignments.
For all emails, please send to shereenorton@katyisd.org
Need to check out a student? Please email in advance with the name of the student and time of pickup. When you arrive, please bring your ID and your phone and scan the QR code at the front doors.
Technical problems during KVA? Please email student name, date of absence and the reason for the absence.
KVA students who have appointments during the school day? Please email student's name, time of appointment and reason for absence. Follow up by emailing doctor's note.
All students- Compulsory Attendance Notifications from Katy ISD Police will begin to go out starting September 21, 2020. KVA and in person students are required to attend every class period every day to avoid truancy issues. If your student has three or more unexcused absences, he/she will receive a letter.
From the Attendance Clerk:
I am diligently working to return calls and emails throughout the day. Unfortunately, due to higher than normal attendance issues with COVID, it might take up to 48 hours before a phone call or email is returned and the attendance issue is resolved. Student attendance can always be seen in the Home Access Center.
