September 28, 2018 - Week 6

Dear Parents:

Most of you probably don't think about the "behind the scenes" work we do here at Wredling, specifically our School Improvement Plan (SIP). But I think it is important to share out our focus for this year. This plan, while labeled as only one year, will realistically last for 3+ years as we become highly skilled in these techniques and strategies. We are focusing on four "Big Picture" items:

  • Achievement in Reading and Math
  • Improving School-wide Behavior
  • Increasing Belonging and Becoming, and
  • Integrating Technology into Instruction

During the next several years, we will tie most of our SIP and Institute days to this work. These four categories are wide and deep and will take us time to become "excellent" at them. And remember, while these are our primary areas for improvement, we still work on all of our other subject areas, too!

Enjoy your weekend!

Student Resource Officer (SRO) Detective Bridget McCowan Presents Dangers of Vaping

On Wednesday, September 26th, Detective Bridget McCowan, who is our SRO at East High School, presented POD talks to all 8th graders on the dangers of vaping. This talk comes in light of recent issues with vaping as it has become the current trend among teenagers. In looking to educate our students, they were presented with facts regarding the legalities pertaining to vaping as well as the dangers that are presented as a result of vaping. A recent article published in April 2018 by the New York Times broaches the topic of addiction to vapes. Please click here to access the article.

Wredling Middle School Team Day:

Next Thursday, October 4th, Wredling students will participate in a building-wide team day. The instructional purpose of this day is to cultivate and promote the elements of connectedness, collaboration, and community within our students and staff. Throughout the day, your child will participate in a myriad of activities such as the Wredling Amazing Race, Social Emotional Learning (SEL), Career Cruising Inventories/Career Matchmaker, and team activities that promote teamwork and collaboration. Below is a brief description of each of the activities your child will participate in next Thursday.

The Amazing Race activities planned will present students with the opportunity to develop team communication, cooperation, and skills in problem-solving. Every activity will require students to find their strengths, collaborate as a team, and work through success and failure.

During our Social Emotional Learning (SEL) lesson, our students will review our school-wide charter to build a positive culture and climate here at Wredling. At the start of the year, students were asked to reflect on two questions to help create our school charter: How do you want to feel when you are here at Wredling? What do we need to do to experience these feelings consistently and to create a positive learning environment? Students will sign the school charter and have an opportunity to create an artistic representation of what the charter means to them.

In addition, 6th, 7th and 8th grade students will work in Career Cruising where 8th grade students will take a “Matchmaker Inventory, which identifies career fields that match with your child’s current interests and 6/7th grade students will complete the “Learning Style Inventory” to identify strategies that will help them to be successful throughout their school year. In addition, all students will complete a “Connection Card” which provides us with information as to whom your child most connects with during their school day.

While team day focuses on community and connectedness, it is our goal to continue to support these efforts in an ongoing manner throughout the school year. As you plan for this day, please click here to access our schedule for the day. A huge thank you goes out to all who to plan this fabulous day!

Showing & Discussion of the film Angst

10/10/18 - 6:30-8:30 p.m.

The purpose of the film Angst is to raise awareness and have conversations about anxiety.
