Looking Ahead...
One of my favorite aspects of the working with middle schoolers is learning about their hopes and dreams for the future. It makes me stop to think about how day-to-day activities can help our kids, long after middle school is over.
For example, my son, who is in 7th grade, has grown up so much this year. See, he's finally learned how to study, and how he does it best. This has not only helped his grades in school, but it's also boosted his confidence in everyday life. Seeing this reminds me that, for my son, studying for a test or quiz isn't just about 7th grade, being 12 years old, or "surviving" adolescence. It's about preparing for life.
Thinking back to when I was 12, I can say, without hesitation, that the world is a tougher place than it used to be. But my son, at 12, is doing far better than I did as a 12 year old, back in what I now remember as "the good old days".
If you have a few minutes this week, I encourage you to read the following article, called 7 Essential Life Skills for High Schoolers to Build Before College: https://www.usnews.com/education/best-colleges/articles/2014/11/05/7-essential-life-skills-for-high-schoolers-to-build-before-college?src=usn_tw .
While I read it and first thought of how it applies to my daughter, who is in high school, many of the themes included here are necessary for success in middle school. And they are being focused on in our classrooms and our school, thinking ahead, not just to high school and after, but for life itself. I have to laugh thinking, if I knew then what I know now, I'd be able to cook more than just scrambled eggs and grilled cheese sandwiches.
: )
As always, thank you for all you do to promote a positive home-school and school-home partnership for our adolescents!
Sincerely,
Dennis Schug
