Message from Dr. Ephlin, Principal
Cold and Flu season is upon us. Here are a few things we can do to stay healthy:
Protect your “T zone”:
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth
- Touching your face is the easiest way for germs to enter your body
Stay home if you are sick:
- Stay home if your fever is over 100 degrees
- Must be fever free for 24 hours without the aid of medication
Wash your hands:
- Wash your hands with soap and warm water for a minimum of 20 seconds. Tip: try singing the “ABC song” twice to yourself
- Make sure to wash all areas thoroughly, including: fingers, between the fingers, palms, wrists and the back of your hands.

Dia de los Muertos
On Fri, Nov. 1, every student on campus had the chance to celebrate Dia de los Muertos in the library! Students had lots of different ways to experience the celebration: they could view a traditional ofrenda, participate in face painting, view a virtual reality art exhibit from the Museo Dolores Olmedo, scroll through slideshows of catrinas and calaveras, and view the Book of Life. But the thing they enjoyed most was the food! Students brought in lots of food to celebrate and the Spanish department provided tamales and pan de muertos for every student. That’s a lot of tamales!

Against 54 clarinet players, Max made 8th chair in a very competitive region, and will have the honor of performing in the top band at our region concert on December 14th. We are very proud of his hard work and dedication.
We need your help!
As part of ongoing campus improvement, we are working through the "Effective School Framework" process with the Texas Education Agency. Copy the access code and click the ESF Survey link. The anonymous survey should only take 20 minutes but will help us gather information to better serve your student. Thank you for the time you will invest in helping guide our campus improvement initiatives.

Each year, as part of the IB (International Baccalaureate) programme, Hernandez partners with a local non-profit to provide educational and service opportunities for our students. For the 2019-2020 school year, we have partnered with the Caring for Cambodia organization. https://www.caringforcambodia.org/
Our 7th grade FLEX students had the opportunity to hear two presentations this week. The main CFC speaker - Cherry (Cambodian adopted daughter of Jamie Amelio, CEO of CFC) did an amazing job painting a picture in the students' minds of how her country was when she was growing up. Her grandfather lived through the atrocities of the Cambodian genocide (1975-1979) and shared stories with her of human resiliance in the face of tragedy. Her grandmother died in the genocide.
She related how hard her life was before CFC and how different her life is now because of CFC and the educational opportunities it gave her - she is now a college student in Florida. In addition, she encouraged each of the students to find their passion and use it to help others.
CFC's fundraising manager, Heaven, brought an additional speaker to yesterday's presentation - Selena, an African Maasai women's rights advocate. She is visiting the U.S. from a small village in Kenya. This is her first time visiting America, and she wanted to relay to our students how important school is and staying in school - to be grateful for the many opportunities they have been given.
Our 7th grade students were so RESPECTFUL! You could hear a pin drop during the presentations. What great students we have. . . our presenters were so impressed!!
