Talk of the Trail
May 2015
CONGRATULATIONS CLASS OF 2015!
We asked our graduates to share their plans after graduation. Here are what a few of them had to say...
DREW HENDERSHOT
"After I finish this, my senior year in high school, I plan to move on to college. I will be attending Michigan State University on a full athletic scholarship for gymnastics. While competing for the gymnastics team, I plan to major in forensic science and become a medical examiner."
KERRY VON SCHRADER
"I plan on going to technical school to become certified to work on the power lines."
MILLER PEACHEY
"I will be attending Auburn University in the fall of 2015. At the moment, I am planning to major in animal sciences to eventually become an equine physical therapist. I had previously planned on becoming famous for one reason or another, but figured I should probably have a backup plan!"
MAHAM HASNAIN
"I have decided to study abroad in Melbourne, Australia starting in March 2016 and will be studying to become an occupational therapist. I plan to join clubs that will help me learn more about the human body and health. Also, after I've graduated I want to volunteer at programs that would target the same group of people I will soon work with when I become an occupational therapist; the people I would work with are disabled individuals, senior citizens, and injured athletes/men/women."
RACHEL LIBMAN
"I currently have a job at an ice cream store and I plan to continue working there over the summer. In September I will begin at Smith College. As of now, I plan to focus on sociology and economics, however since I am going to a liberal arts school I will probably be taking a lot of different types of classes."
ALLISON JAHNS
"I'm very excited to graduate from high school and continue my education in college. I will be attending the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse this fall, and am planning on majoring in Sport and Exercise Science in hopes of eventually becoming a physical therapist. It is one of my dreams to become a physical therapist so I can help rehabilitate people back to their sports, or even just back to normal life. I want to show people the wonders of using exercise as a form of medicine and that everyone is capable of doing anything they set their minds to. We tend to limit our physical capabilities with our minds, and I want to help people overcome that. I will be competing on the gymnastics team for UW - La Crosse, and am very excited for all of the new experiences that I am going to have in college!"
HALEY BOSWELL
"Greetings Earthlings, my name is Haley Boswell and I am a current senior at FTA. This is my third year here and I can honestly say that attending this school has helped shape my life. Not only has it enabled me to get involved with my community and travel, but has taught me responsibility and independence as well. I salute you FTA, for those are things many high-schoolers don’t get the chance to learn. Now well prepared, I will be attending the University of California- Santa Cruz in the fall, with an intended major in physics. I chose this school because they rank number one in research output and have some of the best STEM programs for women. I also chose it because I currently live in the very conservative South (Mississippi), and Santa Cruz is one of the more liberal towns in Northern California. I think life is about constantly seeking out new experiences, and this will definitely be one. I honestly have no clue what the future holds for me, but I do know what I hold for it. Whether I find myself to be a researcher in a lab or the President of the United States or anything in between (and I hope I left a great deal of space in between), I know I will have passion for what I do. That is the very reason why I chose to major in physics; it is where my passion lies. I wish each and every one of you the best and hope that we all continue on into the future with open hearts and inquisitive minds."
{ May }
BY AMBER H.
May is a good month to plant a tree,
May is a good month always for me,
May might be a quiet month for most,
But May is the time to toast,
To the happiness and favorable years to come,
And to the days that start and end with the sun,
I think May is a great month to relax and play,
May is a great place to spend in Cal-i-forn-i-a.
{ Memorial Day }
BY KATIE J.
Originally called Decoration Day, Memorial Day is an American holiday held on the last Monday in May. It started in the years following the Civil War to honor the men and women who died in the military, and became an official holiday in 1971. Since the Civil War took more lives than any other U.S. conflict, the first national cemeteries were created. By the late 1860’s, many towns and cities had begun holding tributes during the spring to commemorate the fallen soldiers, and decorate their graves with flowers.
In May of 1868, General John A. Logan designated May 30th as a day of remembrance of the soldiers, until Congress passed a law, the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, in 1968. This law declared Memorial Day a federal holiday, and established the holiday on the last Monday in May, creating a three-day weekend for federal employees; this law didn’t get started until 1971. Since the law was passed, many cities and towns host Memorial Day parades that often include military personnel and veterans. Some of the biggest parades held every year are in New York, Washington D.C., and Chicago. A lot of people also host parties and barbecues on Memorial Day because it marks the unofficial start of summer.

KATE BOWCUT
A quick little post-graduation update: Accepted into both California State University- Northridge, and California State University- Fullerton. I plan to attend CSUF in the fall :)
As for kiting and surfing; I recently got fourth place in the "King of the North Shore" surf competition. Now I'm in training for the Dominican National Championships coming up in June; I'm hoping to regain my title! I was national champ in 2012, but haven't been in the country to compete for it since! Also, the group of FTA students here in Cabarete seems to be a fast growing group, it's awesome to know everyone is getting the same flexible school schedule like I did!

"To: My only teacher at the moment, Mr. Caleb Smith, and my instructors for extra curricula's Ms. Rachael Johnson and Ms. Stefanie Neumer. Thanks to all of you for being so kind and generous. Not just for helping me but for helping other students as well. Thank you again for being such great teachers. I appreciate it. A quick bit that I think you all already know who have taught me, I am in a program right now and it is great. Since you have helped me in school I have been getting closer each day to going home. Thanks again."
JENNIFER W. -- PARENT OF STUDENT KYRA W.
To Ms. Elizabeth Szczypka: "While Kyra hasn't "met" you, you have positively impacted her and encouraged her love of science! You are the only teacher she has that continually commented and provides feedback on her work! She has learned more since becoming a Forest Trail Academy student than she did as at "traditional" school! Thank you for the kind words about Kyra too, she is a good girl!"
