LMS Weekly Reminders
for the Week of 4/25/21
Your Assistance is Needed
Having emigrated to the United States decades ago, my family has been watching from afar in great distress as the eruption of the volcano, La Soufriere , threatens the small island we still call home. Vincentians are in urgent need of disaster relief: basic needs like potable water, hygiene supplies, and respiratory masks are currently going unmet. With your support and Vincentians' strength, our country may be able to endure this crisis. A recent report from the Weather Channel on our current predicament shows a country which has been devastated and a people who are in dire need.
St. Mary’s County Public Schools (SMCPS) is committed to preparing students to serve as effective and engaged citizens in a democratic global society. A major vehicle to achieve this goal is student service learning. Student service-learning connects meaningful service experiences in our schools and community (local, state, national, and international) with academic learning and civic engagement. This educational experience allows students to develop a deeper commitment to promoting the common good and their willingness to take responsibility for the larger community.
Bearing all of this in mind, I am seeking your assistance in gathering goods to send to St. Vincent as part of the relief efforts. Here is a link which can be used to send things directly to shelters. Alternatively, items from the list below could be dropped off in the main office until Friday, April 30th.
Thank you for any assistance you can offer.

A Friendly Reminder About Mask Wearing
In keeping with our PAWS-itive initiatives this school year, we are continuing our practice of “Safety First” during this era of COVID-19. Based on the Center for Disease Control (CDC), the St. Mary’s County Health Department (SMCHD), and St. Mary’s County Public Schools (SMCPS) guidance, the use of cloth face coverings is most important at times when physical distancing measures cannot be effectively implemented, especially when indoors (or in a shared space). Everyone within a school building, on school grounds, and on the school bus MUST wear cloth face coverings! A neck gaiter alone is not sufficient. Thank YOU for putting “safety first” and doing all you can to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and other illnesses!
6th Grade Families, don’t forget...
Please be aware that Maryland school regulations require all 7th graders to have record of receiving a Tdap and Meningococcal (MCV) vaccinations on file at school. Now is the time to check with your doctor about these requirements, and send your child's updated immunization record to Nurse Robeson. If you have any questions, please contact Nurse Robeson at 301-475-0230 x 5 or krrobeson@smcps.org Our school’s fax number is 301-475-0237.
Lockdown Response Drill
Schools are required to conduct drills during the school year. However, due to COVID-19 safety restrictions, the lockdown protocols will be reviewed with staff and secondary students via video. The videos are meant to show students and school staff what to do in an emergency situation. This notice serves as advanced communication of the scheduled drill on April 28th to parents and guardians.
As the Warm Weather Approaches
...please remember that there are standards for appropriate dress when attending school. What is acceptable to wear to the movies and the mall might not always be acceptable for school. Based on some outfits that the staff and I have been seeing, please consider this a friendly reminder about our LMS expectations.
Clothes must be worn in such a way that the chest, midriff, pelvic/groin area, and buttocks are covered with opaque material.
Clothing displaying or suggesting profanity; sexual activity through graphic images, words, or innuendos; weapons; drugs/alcohol or drug paraphernalia; violence; or tobacco products may not be worn, visible, or displayed.
Head coverings may only be worn indoors so long as the student’s face is visible and it does not interfere with instruction or student safety.
Shoes must be worn that are safe for all activities.
- For girls who wear jeans that have cut outs--if those cuts are above the finger tips and exposing the thighs, then they are not within dress code. If these are worn, then they need to wear tights under them.
- Boys’ pants should be secured at the waist so that undergarments are not exposed. This too is a violation of the school system dress code.
