Message From The Principal

I hope you all had a wonderful long weekend and used the opportunity for some quality time with family and friends. Family moments are precious, and studies have shown that spending time with family can help reduce stress and anxiety, lead to a healthier lifestyle and lengthen your life! Family gives you motivation to be the best version of yourself.

“The single most important factor in our long-term happiness is the relationships we have with our family and close friends.” — Clayton M. Christensen

Whilst the students had their pupil free day, the staff were participating in some professional learning under the direction of Dr. Mike Newton from Thrive Organisational Wellness. This was the second time that he has worked with our staff. Mike ran a session on the first two recovery modalities of movement and sleep and then moved into the nutrition aspect around eating well and the importance of healthy nutrition. The wellbeing of our staff here at St Luke’s is paramount in ensuring we maintain the best possible educators for the children in our care.

A big thank you to our P&F for organising our annual Evening on the Green. It was an enjoyable event and a wonderful opportunity for the community to welcome our new staff and families. From the live music to the cuddly animal farm, it was all a hit! The smiles on the children (and adults) faces said it all. Our community is very special here at St Luke’s and this is due to the generous volunteers that commit to our school each and every day. We are very grateful to you all – thank you!

Last week we held our school swimming carnival. This was the first time we had used HBF Arena and I think you would all agree it was outstanding! The children are to be commended on their team spirit and attitude on the day. Nothing warms my heart more than to see students congratulating and shaking hands with their opponents. Well done to our Faction Captains who displayed exemplary leadership skills in the faction bays. Thank you to Miss R and the staff who attended on the day. I think you would all agree it was a very well organised event due to the hard work that happened behind the scenes. Thank you also to our parent volunteers, once again stepping up to the call as usual. Congratulations to MacKillop for the overall win on the day!

Have a wonderful week and continue to show up and shine!

God bless,

Sarah Williams

NAPLAN

The Year 3 and 5 children will start the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) on Wednesday the 15th of March. NAPLAN is a series of common literacy and numeracy tests conducted annually across Australia for all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The NAPLAN tests provide valuable information to all schools about the performance of their students and support the ability of schools to focus teaching on areas of need. The tests also help parents see how their child is progressing against national standards. Please keep in mind that NAPLAN is only one assessment that schools use to gather data on student progress. Children that are absent for any assessments will have the opportunity to complete the tests at a later date.

Cyber Safety Workshops

This week, students in Year 3-6 were involved in a Cyber Safety and Digital Wellness workshop which was run by Dr Kayelene Kerr. It was a highly informative and interesting session for all students.

Dr Kayelene gave the students some useful tips such as:

  • Pause before you share words, photos and videos
  • Be careful what you share and who you share it with
  • Know what an unsafe secret is and the warning signs.

Interestingly, some students spoke about having devices in their bedrooms, were unaware of where their online photos were being stored, and were complaining of sore eyes and necks at times. We hope this workshop has helped your child understand a little more about our online world and what they can do to help keep themselves safe, well and healthy with their devices. We encourage you to discuss the content of this workshop with your child at home to reinforce their learning and assist them in navigating the online world.

Thank you to the P&F who sponsored not only the student workshops but also the parent workshop that was held on Tuesday evening. We hope all the families who attended found it to be worthwhile and beneficial.

Student Council

The Student Council have been meeting each week to plan initiatives to improve St Luke’s CP. They have been proudly wearing their rainbow sashes in the playgrounds so that they are visible to children that may need assistance during lunchtime play. Student Council members are also going to check on our school bags and give prizes to the tidiest class. This will motivate children to keep St Luke’s CP clean and take pride in their wonderful environment.

The Student Council are looking forward to going on an excursion to the Primary GRIP Leadership Conference on the 22nd of March. This will be an opportunity for the students to develop their leadership and collaboration skills.

School Social Media

Families are encouraged to follow St Luke's on social media to keep up to date with the many learning experiences offered to the children and all of the fun happening around our fabulous school:

Each year level also has a Facebook group for families to join which are managed by our class representatives. These groups are a great way to keep in contact with other families in your child's year level and can be found here.

World's Greatest Shave

Year 6 student, Liam, has been growing his hair for approximately 18 months and it is nearly time for him to cut it all off for the World's Greatest Shave. Liam's goal is to fundraise to assist people, particularly children, who have cancer and other long term illnesses. He aims to complete his shave on Friday 17th March at 2.30pm during the national fundraiser week. Congratulations to Liam for his fundraising efforts so far, donations can be made using this link.

The main focus is to explain the three Sacraments – Reconciliation, Eucharist, Confirmation - and how they relate to each other. We aim to further support your understanding of the Sacraments, to empower you as the first and primary educators, to nurture your own and your Child’s/Children's faith.

At the end of the evening, general information regarding procedures such as the process for booking your Mass time to receive the Sacraments (Eucharist and/or Confirmation), photography arrangements, and any other general business will be discussed.
