News & Notes from Josiah Haynes Elementary School

February 25, 2021

Dear Families,

Last month I wrote to you with hope that 2021 would bring with it the promise of new possibilities for all of us. As we see signs of spring in the not-too-distant future, we are mindful of the newness that spring brings forth. This year, we need the newness of spring more than ever.

Earlier this week Governor Baker and Education Commissioner Reilly announced their intention to move all school districts to full in-person learning by this April. In Sudbury, this comes on the heels of the superintendent's announced plans to increase in-person learning this spring, which parallels considerations for increased in-person learning in districts across the state and around the country.

We have experienced great success this school year given seeminly-insurmountable challenges, and it has been on the backs of educators and parents. In the weeks ahead we will take a look at what will need to be done in order to increase in-person learning for students, and see what we can feasibly accomplish. I am committed to keeping the best interests of our students at the forefront of all of our decisions.

I am working closely with my SPS leadership colleagues as well as the Haynes Working Group to identify challenges and plan next steps. Adjusting our model will take tremendous planning, coordination and work. Please know I will keep you informed as decisions are made and next steps identified. There are a lot of questions to surface, solutions to figure out and work to be done. As Nelson Mandela said, "it always seems impossible until it is done."

Spring Parent Conferences Begin Next Week

The turn of the page to March brings with it the start of Spring Parent/Teacher Conferences.

As we shared with you earlier this year, Sudbury's elementary schools are piloting a revised schedule of progress reporting, which this year includes a midyear and year-end report card along with fall and spring parent conferences.

Be on the lookout for invitations from your children's teachers to schedule a virtual conference. As always, we look forward to sharing with you and learning from you!

NEW FOR 2021: Sign up for Specialist Parent/Teacher Conferences

In addition to conferences with grade-level classroom teachers, this year Haynes is happy to offer the opportunity for parents to participate in optional conferences with our specialist teachers. Signing up is easy. Just click on the link below to sign up. Specialist Teachers will be in touch with parents who signed up to provide a meeting link.

Haynes Winter Fitness Challenge Keeps Community Moving

Over the past month, the students at Haynes have been busy, active Hawks! The Haynes Fitness Challenge started in early January to get students and families moving during the winter months. With support from HOP and staff at Haynes, we had one of our most successful extracurricular activities at Haynes!

Over the month, students kept track of their activities on fitness logs and were able to submit videos and pictures of them being active outside of school, and WOW were we impressed with the number of submissions!

Over 59 hours of videos were sent in with students playing and being active!

Each student received a Haynes Hawk bracelet that was sent home with them to show their school spirit, and students that returned the completed fitness logs will be entered to win some fun prizes (shown below) which will be awarded this week!
