What Was the Great Depression?

An economic disaster that started in 1929 and lasted through the 1930's, it didn't end until the start of WWII in 1939. The official start was the crash of the New York Stock Market.

What caused the Great Depression in Canada?

  • many investors/companies were American (i.e. branch plants) and they were affected by the crash
  • an increase in immigration meant that there were more people for less jobs
  • natural resources - many American companies were no longer buying Canadian resources because of the poor economic situation at home.

What was the effect of the Great Depression on Canadian cities? (workers)

  • many people lost their jobs - have no money, can't pay rent, can't buy food, etc...
  • many men would go from town to town to find work (by 'hopping a train')
  • businesses and banks in many cities closed
