News from the Health Office
Reminder about medications:
All medications, both prescription and non-prescription, require a physician’s order and parental consent (and must be renewed each school year). All medication must be kept in the nurse’s office and be overseen by the Registered Nurse in order to keep all students safe. Students are not permitted to keep medications in their lockers or backpacks with the exception of Epi-pens and inhalers if deemed appropriate by the student’s physician. The nurse must be notified that student will carry these medications and the proper physician’s orders and parental consents must be signed and filed in the nursing office.
Life threatening allergies and asthma-
Please send in action plans signed by the MD, parental consent forms and medications to the Health Office ASAP! Thank you!
Health Screenings-
Vision, hearing, body mass index (height and weight) and postural screening (scoliosis) are required by MDPH and will be performed throughout the school year. The TMS nurse will screen all 7th graders for vision, hearing and BMI and will conduct postural screenings for all 6th, 7th and 8th graders throughout the school year. If you choose to refuse to have your child screened, a written parental note is required along with proof that your child has been has been evaluated by a physician for each screening refused.
Vaccinations-
Prior to entering the 7th Grade, all students must provide a copy of a current physical (signed by an MD and dated within one year) and proof of the following immunizations: 1 dose of tdap, 2 doses of MMR, 2 doses of Varicella and 3 doses of Hepatitis B. Each time your child receives an immunization or has his or her yearly physical exam, please send a copy to the health office to keep your child’s file up to date.

Washington DC Information 8th Grade
Hello 8th Grade Parents and Guardians,
EF Explore America, who plans our 8th grade Washington DC trip, has prepared a new flyer for those interested in having their current 8th grader take the April 2018 trip -dates April 9th-13th. The flyer attached below outlines how much monthly payments are if you have not yet enrolled but do so in the month of September. Monthly payments increase if you enroll after September.
The overall cost of the tour is $885. However, that sum can decrease with increased enrollment
If we have 110-119 students enroll, the cost is $885 per student.
If we have 120-129 students enroll, the cost is $865 per student.
If we have 130-139 students enroll, the cost is $845 per students.
We need families to sign up by December 20, 2017. EF Explore America needs time to book hotel rooms, tours, dinners and tickets in advance. We are only one of many school groups who visit Washington, D.C. in the spring. Arrangements for a group of 130 must be completed well in advance of the trip. We currently have around 55 students enrolled, but we typically reach 120, so we expect many will be signing up, and we would like you to do so as soon as possible.
Please note that this year all students who will be travelling to Washington need to agree to and sign our school travel policy on points of attendance, discipline and academics. The travel agreement is HERE! Please read over, print out, sign and give to either Mr. Maslanka or the office.
If you would like more information on this tour, the TMS homepage has more info under the TMS news section- see 2018 Washington DC trip information page, or visit the tour website at: http://www.efexploreamerica.com/tour-website/1979754FS and you can enroll there.

Our kids are doing WHAT? What can I do to protect them? What apps should I be worried about? Is social networking safe? Is my child being cyberbullied? What’s texting? Sexting? What’s next? It’s often overwhelming being a parent today in our technology-driven society. Keeping up with the latest trends and dangers can often seem like an impossible task. Katie will help you navigate the digital waters and let you know what’s new, what’s now, and what’s next when it comes to your children and technology, and provides parents with proactive initiatives to keep kids safe. The following is an example of the information that is covered during this presentation:
Updates on the latest technology trends and dangers
Social media
Digital Tattoos
Interactive gaming
Case examples and real life implications
Cell phones/smartphones/devices
Cyberbullying laws and legislation
Overview of what message Katie sends to students
Rules and regulations
Q&A: Parents are encouraged to asked questions throughout, and the program will end with an open forum allowing parents more time to ask specific questions
Middle School
At this point, the majority of kids this age have social networking accounts and are actively networking with others using various forms of technology (i.e. apps, games, messaging, etc.). At this stage, it’s imperative for them to understand the permanency of their actions online, as once they send, save or share, their information is out there – and stays out there – forever. The programs for the 6th-8th grade students have a different tone than the programs for the younger grades, as the things these kids this age are getting into require digging a bit deeper into topics like responsible posting, and understanding how they can make technology work for them, not against them. The following is an example of what is covered during this presentation:
Social Networking
Interactive gaming trends and rules
All about apps
Technology tattoos
Cyberbullying
Sexting/Child Pornography
Viral kindness
Q&A: Time permitting, Katie invites questions from the students
