Major Accomplishments

  • In 1907, Pablo painted "Les Demoiselles d'Avignon."With this painting he started the Cubism movement.
  • 1927 onward, Picasso became involved with Surrealism. His Surrealist painting "Guernica" is considered one of the greatest paintings of all time. It was completed in 1937 after German bombers supporting Franco's Nationalist forces carried out a devastating aerial attack on the Basque town of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War.
  • Picasso is recognized as the world's most prolific painter with 13,500 paintings, 100,000 prints and engravings, and 34,000 illustrations which were used in books.

Life in Paris

In 1901 Pablo moved from Spain to Paris because it was the ideal place to experiment with new art forms and styles. He hugely influenced artisitc movements during the 20th Century. Picasso met Fernande Olivier became his mistress in Paris in 1904. Olivier appears in many of his Rose Period paintings. He died on April 8, 1973, in Mougins, France.
