Literacy/Reading
In literacy this week, we looked closely at nonfiction text and took steps to analyze it. The first step is to identify the WHO or the WHAT the passage is about and track the DETAILS. The last thing we need to ask ourselves is: Why is this important?
Next week, we will review all the standards we have covered during our Historical Fiction unit. This includes fiction and nonfiction standards. We will have our Cycle 4 Assessment on Friday, Feb. 17th.
Math
This week in Math we are finishing up computing fractional parts of a whole number and solving fractional parts of a whole word problems. This Friday, February 10th, we will be taking a decimal pre-test in order to prepare planning for our next unit. Remember, a pretest is used for teacher planning and your child does not need to study for it.
Next week we will be adding and subtracting fractions, including mixed numbers. Furthermore, they will be solving word problems in which they will need to incorporate many skills that we have worked on in our fraction unit, such as changing improper fractions to mixed numbers, finding equivalent fractions, and simplifying fractions.
Our Unit Test for Fractions will be on Friday, February 24th. This test will count as their formal assessment for our fractions unit.
Science
Did you know that their are three different types of plate movements that create Earthquakes?? Did you know that volcanoes can cause earthquakes?
You can watch what happens when an earthquake hits by downloading the seismometer app on either an iPad or iPhone. We watched today from my phone and it is amazing...really cool!!
We might even investigate what happens to buildings while they are sitting on "Jello" and an earthquake hits.
This all leads us into rocks and minerals and where they come from in the cycle. Which does not actually follow a circle. More on that to come:)
Please let your child start investigating rocks, collecting rocks and making a great collection.
