Appropriate PE Shoes
In PE, safety is always first. Wearing the wrong shoes can impact a student’s safety/success during activities. Shoes like boots, can get in the way of simple activities like running, jumping, and stopping. We encourage students to bring a pair of tennis shoes in their backpack if wearing boots during wintertime. It is important for students to wear proper footwear in order to participate safely in class activities, and to be successful with those activities.
Change of Clothing
We have all heard the saying, "There is not bad weather, only poor clothing". As we move into winter, please remember to dress your child appropriately for outdoor play. (Rain gear, warm jacket).
Spills, mud puddles and accidents can occur while at school. Please send a complete change of clothes with your child (regardless of grade). Label your child's clothes and put them in a ziploc bag to be kept in their backpack. If soiled clothes are sent home, please send a new set of clothes in a new bag.

COVID testing:
As a result of the overwhelming demand for testing and supply chain issues, we will temporarily pause COVID-19 testing at the District Office while we work with the provider to find better solutions for managing the demand.
In the meantime, if you need a test, please contact your health provider or other testing location. We’ve included a few suggestions of testing sites below. Thank you for your understanding and patience during this widespread challenge.
GS Labs (several locations including Lynnwood and Northgate)
House Call Doctors (Snohomish and Everett locations)
Snohomish Health District at 3715 Oakes Ave., Everett, Longfellow building (appointments required):

Sick Kids:
Keep your student home if they are sick. Even if you think it's allergies or "just the sniffles," staying home prevents others from catching any germs or viruses. Refer to Snohomish Health Department for specific COVID protocols.
- Remember it is your responsibility to contact the school 24 Hours attendance line at (425) 366-2605 to report absence.
Daily Screening Form:
Please use this Daily Screen Form (translations coming soon) with your child and keep wearing masks, washing your hands and limiting social gatherings to help students stay healthy and in school.
Student and Staff health and safety is our priority.
Weather Alert
If weather causes the district to delay or cancel school, you will receive a phone message and email from the district. This helps ensure we reach everyone, including those without an email address on file, before students stand outside at a bus stop, and before parents leave for work. If you have a mobile phone number on file with your child’s school, you should also receive a text message.
As usual, it will also be posted on the district website and posted through FlashAlert, which also feeds into mainstream local news feeds.
If your child rides the bus, it’s helpful to know your bus route’s alternative pick-up and drop-off location ahead of time. Find limited bus route information on the transportation website.
You can sign up for FlashAlert notifications at www.flashalert.net, click on the link and create an account by following this steps:
- For “region” select Seattle/Western Wash
- Click on Island and Snohomish County Schools
- Select Mukilteo School District
Reminder
There is no school on Monday, January 17th in honor of Martin
Luther King Day.
“The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to
think critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true
education."
Martin Luther King, Jr.
The Great Kindness Challenge Jan 24-27
The Great Kindness Challenge is a week-long program dedicated to creating a culture of kindness and compassion in communities worldwide. To help our students practice kindness and put their compassion into action, they will receive a Great Kindness Challenge checklist. We will encourage all students to complete as many acts of kindness as possible at school and hope they feel inspired to continue them at home! Together, we will lift each other up, cheer each other on and show the world that KINDNESS MATTERS!
This challenge will take place January 24th - January 27th. Please join us in encouraging and reminding your children to participate in the kindness checklist and spirit days.
Monday 24 – Crazy for Kindness: Wear crazy hair
Tuesday 25 – Hats Off to Kindness: Wear your favorite hat
Wednesday 26 – Team Kindness: Wear your favorite sports uniform
Thursday 27 – Dream of Kindness: Pajama Day
PTA Survey
All PTA members received a survey via email to gauge interest in the existing programs that Columbia PTA historically organized. We also seek input on how to make your PTA more accessible. PLEASE take a few minutes to complete and return.
Thanks to your orders for the Virtual Book Fair this fall, our librarian has $425 to spend on books for our library! We are aware of some major delays in orders being fulfilled. Like everyone else, Scholastic has had supply chain and staffing issues this past year. If you have not yet received your order, the best way to follow up is at 1-800-770-4662.
- Next PTA General Meeting is January 27th from 4-5 PM via Zoom
Free Meals for all Students!
- Meals for all students are free of charge regardless of Free/Reduced Status for the 21-22 school year.
- Please encourage families to complete free/reduced applications, as they do need them to receive other benefits that are available (P-EBT Cards).
- Hot food will be served.
Family Outreach
Hi. My name is Libby Stewart-Finerty, aka “Mrs. Finerty”. This is my fourth year as Columbia’s Elementary Support Specialist/School Social Worker. I’m so excited to back in person and I love seeing the students every day on campus. I help support your child’s social wellbeing at school. Your students will see me in their classrooms teaching Bully Prevention, and Child Safety classes for K-5. I also meet with students and families regarding mental health, behavioral and social emotional concerns.
In addition to dealing with matters associated with your child's social wellbeing in school, I am here to assist with school clothes and other resources such as food.
