They can measure your temperature, heigh, weight, etc. They are usually dressed in scrubs, you can tell if someone is a nurse or not when you are in the hospital. They sometime can treat a patient but mostly they care for the patient.

Two major certifications you need to become a nurse are National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) and Institute for Credentialing Excellence (ICE).
