Principal's Message

Dear Adelante Selby Spanish Immersion Families,

We would like to wish everyone a Happy Holidays and Feliz Año Nuevo!

It was great seeing everyone at Parent Teacher Conferences. We sent you the report card and the Family Information Next Steps in the mail(if you did not receive them, please let us know). Here are the grade level links to Next Steps to help your child at home in Math and Reading:

Currently, students are finishing up the i-Ready in Reading and will start the i-Ready Math benchmark test this week. We use this information to help group students and the assessment also updates their MyPath individualized lessons so that every student gets what they need to improve and get at or above grade level in Reading and Math.

The 2022/23 School Directory is being sent home with students this week. Each family will receive one copy of the Directory. Please check the backpack of your eldest child for your copy. A limited number of extra copies are available in the office. A big SHOUT OUT and thank you to Elizabeth Flegel for the volunteer work on this year's School Directory!

The Music Man Kids Musical:

The Music Man Kids Musical was a wonderful event where our students had the opportunity to develop their talents after school leading up to the live performances this past weekend on a stage in front of live audiences at MIT auditorium. Since September, the students worked hard learning their parts and rehearsing in preparation for the performances. Parents and community members were very much involved in supporting the effort with incredible set and costume designs which were remarkable! Parents also helped with make up, selling tickets, making the program, selling treats, and taking photos. This year due to some last minute cast members having to be absent, there were additional challenges to overcome and made the production that much more challenging! The entire crew and staff rolled with the changes and persevered to make for a remarkable show! We are so fortunate to have a number of alumni students and parents that come back and participate in the production. We are also fortunate to have teachers who are willing to help like Maestra Dave with the sound crew (which included some Adelante alumni), Maestras Jeanette and Lili, and of course the Producers: Maestras Nell Douglas and Yesenia Bravo. We had Danny Giray, our Dance instructor, as the Choreographer and Vocal Music teacher Maestra Lidia as the Ensemble director. Finally, the partnership with the San Carlos Children's Theater and Director Caitlin Berka has been very successful! Caitlin is very gifted in how she patiently works to bring out the best in our students. I want to thank everyone involved for supporting Music Man Kids and the students who participated--Bravo!! Finally, a very special THANK YOU to Superintendent Baker and the Facilities Department for allowing us to use and have a safe and successful live and in person event at MIT Auditorium!

5th Grade Outdoor Education Trip January 23- 27th; Parent Meeting Monday, December 5th at 6:00pm

The 5th grade students will be attending Outdoor Education at YMCA Camp Jones Gulch, near La Honda, during the week of January 23, 2023. Outdoor Education is one of the most memorable experiences of a child’s school years. The students experience the life science standards taught by attending classes, taking field trips, hiking and experiencing the natural environment, and they bond with classmates. The outdoor education naturalists provide a fun, educational, and interactive week of activities. You can also go to the Outdoor Education website at http://www.smcoe.org/learning-and-leadership/outdoor-education/, where you can read about the naturalists and program provided.

January 9th Deadline: to complete the online Outdoor Education Registration/Health/T shirt order forms, and payment: $200 full pay or $175 if qualify for Free and Reduced Lunch(pay by check or cash in the school Office and make checks out to Adelante Selby Spanish Immersion School).

We want every 5th grader to attend and participate on this amazing field trip experience so if you need financial assistance please let us know in the office ASAP.

New TK/Kindergarten Registration 2023/23 and Tours

The School District Enrollment and School of Choice for 2023/24 TK/Kindergarten opened on November 4th and continues through Friday, January 13th at 3:00pm. It is important that both the Registration/Enrollment Form for your home school(based on your address) and the School of Choice Form for Adelante Selby Spanish Immersion must be completed by January 13th. Current PreSchool students here on our campus with Maestra Aida or Maestra Yulizma and TK students with Maestra Jennifer will have priority acceptance as long as the forms are completed on time. Furthermore, siblings of students who are currently enrolled here and at Kennedy in the Spanish immersion strand also have priority for acceptance if the forms are completed by January 13th. Please complete this Adelante Selby Sibling 2023/24 Form so we can alert the District to prioritize your acceptance for next year.

Please help get the word out to family, friends, and neighbors about our weekly informational TK/Kindergarten Tours that meet in person at the school office every Thursday at 8:40AM and the tours will continue through the end of January. Please register for a TK/Kindergarten Tour with this form: TK/Kindergarten Tour Registration. Promoting our school by "word of mouth" from parents and community members is the best way to "market" our school and immersion program to prospective new parents. When promoting our school, keep in mind that mastering two or more languages has enormous benefits for our students, both native speakers of English and native speakers of the target language(Spanish) at a dual language immersion school. Other talking points when talking about our school are that research has confirmed the benefits of biliteracy and bilingualism that are demonstrated as brain and cognitive functioning, academic, economic, and social advantages, as well as cross-cultural competency and supporting a stronger family cohesion and connection to their family heritage.

We have 19 students in 4th and 5th grade benefitting from after school tutoring from Menlo High School volunteers. We also now have 4 parent volunteers that are helping in the classroom with teachers during Math time. We know we have a very committed parent community(we have the highest number of approved parent volunteers in the district!)that want to help and believe we can leverage the support and really make a difference. Please sign up if would be willing to help out with Math tutoring after school or volunteering in classrooms during Math time using this Google Form: Math Volunteers. Please keep in mind that volunteers must be approved by the School District using this application before they can help(the district is no longer requiring proof of Covid vaccination to volunteer). Recently, the Site Council also has approved for Maestro Dave and Maestra Maribel to provide additional Math support for 3rd-5th grades during the school day for students that need the help.

Child Nutrition Services: December Breakfast and Lunch Menus

A healthy body fosters a healthy and focused mind. Well-rounded meals served in RCSD school cafeterias are created using USDA nutrition guidelines as well as “kid-approved” recipes. Whole grains, milk, fresh produce, protein, and healthy fats containing Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids are the stars of the breakfast and lunch menu items. Studies show that good eating habits and healthy behaviors are connected to academic achievement. Meals provided by Child Nutrition Services help to shape lifelong healthy habits. All students have the opportunity to eat breakfast and lunch for free again this year through our Child Nutrition Services.

Here are the menus for October:
