Wild Weather
Hope you enjoyed the wintry weather this weekend. Please send us photos, quotes, drawings, questions that your child had about the snow. It could be fun to talk about these in class.
Research
Students wondered, "What did the Lenape wear in the winter?"
They wore furs of various animals!
The children thought these looked comfy.
We spent over an hour in front of this one diorama at the Natural History Museum. (One half group did, the other will do this trip in a few weeks' time.)
The children drew. Wrote questions. Shared their questions. Shared answers or guesses about each other's questions. And read the information on the placards.
Happy Birthday MLK
Constructing the Brooklyn of 400 Years Ago
Children are working in small groups to research and then construct different land forms that were present in Brooklyn 400 years ago. We are going to make a model of the area to help children imagine how the Lenape used resources from their environment to survive.
Brainstorming some words and some background knowlege about the fresh water in the region.
An outline of the coastline of Brooklyn. Drawn "blind", from memory, after looking at our map extensively. It's a fun challenge!
We were told this was a honey badger. It could also be a bird found in the forests of Brooklyn 400 years ago.
Math
We discussed different types of problems. Why is 52 - 20 easier than 52 - 21? Why is 52 - 25 harder than either of those?
Have your child explain how to solve these problems and then explain their thoughts about the analytical questions above.
