What is it?
Encephalocele also known as cranium bifidum, is a protrusion of brain tissue through a congenital fissure in the skull.
How is Encephalocele caused?
The exact cause is unknown, but Encephalocele is caused by the failure of the neutral tube to close completely during fetal development. Proper levels of folic acid have been shown to prevent Encephalocele.
What are the symthoms?
- Mental and growth retardation
- Seizures
- Development delay
- Vision problems
- Ataxia(uncoordinated muscle movement)
- Microcephally(abnormally small head)
What's the cure?
Usually surgery is performed during infancy to place the protruding tissues back into the skull, remove the sac, and correct the associated craniofacial abnormalities. Protrusions can e removed without causing major disfunctional disability.
