Hello Tigers!

Since our last newsletter, I hope this edition finds you having emerged from the Thanksgiving break rested and refueled (stuffed?) for the homestretch of 2018. As we look to the coming break, we will have had four solid weeks of school on the heels of "No School November".

There is definitely an energy in the air. Symptomatic of the season, and regardless of what tradition you do (or don't) celebrate, shopping, decorating, baking, socializing and general merriness abound, causing a change in routine for many families looking to soak up the season. Yet, it is also important to remember there are many in our community for which this stereotypical portrait of the holidays is a rather abstract concept, as family, finances and health, among many hardships, are constant preoccupations. Regardless of where your family falls on the spectrum, this can be a time of heightened stress and anxiety for many children and adults.

As you might expect, we see some of this in the hallways at Raleigh Park, as the busyness and stressors of life get the best of all of us - physically, emotionally and cognitively. Please accept this friendly reminder to be mindful of school-centric routines for your children (eating, sleeping, getting to school on time, or otherwise) as we look to finish the next two weeks strong. It is also important to recognize both positive and negative vibes from adults undoubtedly trickle down to our children.

All said, please enjoy what the season has to offer, while concurrently wishing each of you a semblance of normalcy and routine. For me, warm(ing) beverages and a healthy dose of stereotypical, predictable and poorly-acted (yet can't look away) Hallmark movies always does the trick!

School closure or delayed start decisions will typically be communicated to media outlets and posted on the District website, Facebook and Twitter by 5:30am. We encourage families to make transportation and attendance decisions for their child(ren) based on their own assessment of travel conditions at their location.

When all district schools and facilities are closed

• All daytime and evening activities/events on closure days are canceled
  

When there is a 2-hour delay in opening school and buses are on snow routes

• All schools will open two hours later than regularly scheduled

When school is on time and buses are on snow routes

• All schools operate on regular daily schedules

• If the weather forecast calls for declining weather conditions throughout the day, the district will implement snow routes for PM dismissal

When weather conditions necessitate an early closure of schools

• We encourage you to refer to the BSD website, SchoolMessenger and local media for more detailed information

• All daytime and evening activities/events are cancelled

Wednesday – Early Dismissal School Days

• The District will not have a 2-hour delay on Wednesday. The District will maintain a regular Wednesday schedule with Early Release or close schools for the day.

Last spring, students in grades 3 – 8 and 11 in the Beaverton School District and throughout Oregon took the state tests (Smarter Balanced) in English Language Arts and Mathematics. In addition to content standards, these assessments are designed to measure critical thinking, problem solving and communication skills. The test results provide you, our schools, our district and the state with information about how well we are preparing our students for their next steps including college and career readiness.

Raleigh Park 3rd, 4th and 5th graders will take these tests once between January and June 2019. House Bill 2655 permits parents and adult students to annually opt-out of Oregon’s statewide summative tests in English Language Arts and Math by submitting a form to the school the student attends. The school shall provide any student who is exempted from a state test with supervised study time while other students are testing.
