A Message from the Principal of AOC, Dr. Fine
Week of 9/13-9/17
Greetings AOC Families,
I hope that you had a great weekend! This upcoming Friday is a Monday/ Wednesday schedule.
This last week, we hope that you enjoyed our virtual Back-to-School Night.
This upcoming Friday, September 17th, Congressman Mike Garcia will visit our campus for Constitution Day. He requested to make a special visit with our AOC students.
Also, on Friday, 9/17 from 5:30pm-8:30pm, all AOC students have been invited to attend the ASB Opening of the Year dance. There are no tickets to buy for the dance. Students just have to show their AOC I.D. No guests from other schools are allowed to attend. The dance will be held outdoors at Rancho Pico. All students are expected to follow social distancing and mask guidelines. Safety will be our number one priority.
Have a great week, AOC! Please reach out to me with any questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Dr. Juliet Fine
Principal of AOC

Student Care Line Review
Last year, we introduced a new reporting system for our students and their families to use to share a concern about another student's well-being. This reporting system is called the Student Care Line. This week, our teachers will review this information with students during their Advisory and Freshman Seminar classes.
Over the last several years, the William S. Hart Union High School District has placed an emphasis on student wellness. Knowing that a student who feels emotionally supported is more successful, the District set out to open Wellness Centers on each of our campuses, with the first of those opening in August of 2019. Now the District is looking to expand this effort even further by taking the existing Text-A-Tip line and re-branding it as the new Student Care Line, providing a more comprehensive function.
The Student Care Line includes mental health and wellness concerns. For our students, if they are struggling or know someone who is struggling, the Student Care Line will make early intervention possible, allowing for small problems to be handled before they become big problems.
Cause for concern might be indicated by:
Trouble controlling emotions
Withdrawal from friends and usual activities
Feelings of rejection or solitude
Feeling constantly disrespected
Frequent loss of temper
Increased risk-taking behavior
Talk of suicide or loss of hope
Self-harm
Declining school performance
Students and families are at their best when their emotional well-being is supported. Please join us in our commitment to this effort by using our Student Care Line when you need it. I have attached a link to the poster that hangs in every one of our classrooms at AOC.

The event will begin with a resource fair and at 6:00 p.m. a panel of experts will discuss social media exposure and the importance of having clear limits for your children.
Although helpful, social media can potentially expose youth to dangerous behaviors at a young age. Learn about the various effects too much screen time and social media exposure could have on a young person.
