SUP Poetry Slam
Zellas was invited to perform at the poetry slam last night in Ponsonby at Studio One Toi Tu
She received an emerging artist award prezzy and won a cash prize. Ken Arkind from Action Education sent me an email praising her performance. She has written the following about her experience.
Zellas Uitisone
On the 15 of June I had the privilege of performing my spoken word “The mask of perfection” at the SUP slam 2022. I am always in awe of the raw talent of every poet that takes the stage. Speaking their truth and delivering it in a way that is empowering and inspiring to see/hear. Definitely an opportunity I will always take and highly recommend to all.
Cystic Fibrosis
Since we have some students with Cystic Fibrosis at our school, There are a few things we would like to share with you :
1. Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic condition. It mainly affects the child’s lungs and digestive system, causing problems with breathing and how their body digests food.
2. Children with CF may not look sick, but it takes a lot of work to stay well. Most children with CF have twice-daily chest physio, take daily medications, have pancreatic enzyme capsules with their food and sometimes need high energy supplement drinks. CF does not affect a child's intelligence.
3. Children with CF may have a chronic cough. This doesn’t mean they have a cold or are unwell, but CF causes mucus in their lungs to become thick and sticky and coughing is the best way to get rid of the mucus. Their cough is not contagious to other people.
A doctor consultant sent us a formal clinical letter and mentioned the CF cough is Not related to COVID . Please allow them to cough in your classroom.
4. Handwashing is important for everyone. Encourage everyone in your class to clean their hands regularly.
5. Children with CF may need to go to the toilet frequently. They may need to go urgently and often their poos can be quite smelly. Quick and easy access to a toilet, and a sink to wash their hands, is important.
A " nurse pass " will be given to them to go to the nearest toilet by their classroom. Not necessary to the nurse toilet .
6. Exercise is important. Regular exercise helps to keep lungs and bodies healthy and should be a part of every child’s school day. Children with CF should take part in physical activity just like their classmates.
No PE limitation.
7. Good communication with parents is key. Regular communication between teachers, parents and children is key to making sure children with CF reach their full potential at school.
